Healthy Food

Objectives: To develop pupils’ speaking, writing, listening, reading skills, to develop quick reaction and ability to use necessary vocabulary, to develop curiosity and interest to foreign language, to widen outlook and linguistic skills, to teach to work in groups and individually.

Equipments: text-book, additional texts for reading and listening, proverbs, sayings, tables and cards.

Procedure

I.Introduction

Greeting

T. Good morning, friends!

P. Good morning, teacher!

T. How are you today? Are you healthy?

P. Fine. Yes, we are.

Warming-up

T. By the way, do you know any proverbs or sayings about health? (slide 1)

P. Certainly.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Good health is above wealth.

After dinner sit a while after supper work a while.

Appetite comes with eating.

T. The motto of our lesson will be:

 “Let food be our medicine” (slide 2)

Aim

At the end of the lesson you’ll be able to:

-speak about food products and analyse them;

-use different descriptions;

- understand the information during the discussion;

-find necessary information;

-do grammar exercises (Passive Voice)(slide 3)

T. Answer the questions.

    What role does food play in your life?

    Do you like junk food?

    How many times a week do you have borsch or soup?

    Do you bring a packed lunch or have lunch at a school canteen?

    Do you eat many sweets?

    What food would you advise to eat?

As a conclusion of your answers will be your “FOOD PYRAMID”You were divided into six groups (grains, vegetables, fruit, oils, dairy products, meat and fish)  Let’s start. (pupil’s answers about  the products) (slide 5)

II. Main part

T. Your health is important and you should restore it and keep it. So you should lay proper foundation and I think that these texts will help you. You’ll work  in groups.(breakfast, dinner, lunch, supper)While reading use interactive strategies.(slide 6) Find in the text information and mark it:

+ information you know;

. information that contradicts your ideas;

-new information;

? information you are interested in.

After reading be ready to name good healthy habits from your text.

  1. Health is above wealth. You know this proverb. But do all of you follow good healthy habits? Do you start your day with a healthy breakfast? Most of us busy people forget to have the first meal of the day – BREAKFAST. Contrary to the thought that  eating ‘on the run’ will help you to lose weight, instead it sends signals to the body to use less calories. So the aim of burning more calories to lose weight is not achieved .
  2. We can’t live without water. With the help of it we prepare food. But do you know that pure water is truly essential for living. One should drink 8-10 glasses of water every day to flush out the toxins produced in the body. We should drink water before meal, after it and before going to sleep.
  3. Eat healthy food. Good nutrition is one which enables us to grow well and enjoy good health. We should follow a basic rule while planning our meals. Carbohydrates should form 65-80% of the diet, fats should be 10-30% and proteins should be 7-15%.Vitamines and minerals are included. Each component has a specific role in the body. Include fruit and vegetables in your diet.
  4. Incorporate milk, its products and other sources of calcium. Calcium is required for healthy bones teeth and other functions in the body. Studies have proved that incorporating milk products help you lose weight.
  5. Keep sugar and caffeine to minimum. A cup of tea is 70Cal and coffee is 110 Cal. So every time you help yourself with a cup of coffee remember: you are adding these calories to your daily intake. Sugary drinks are a source of empty energy that you don’t need.

T. Unfortunately we know little about food especially nowadays in the age of technology. Alfred E. Newman said:”We are living in a world today where lemonade is made from artificial flavors and furniture polish is made from real lemons”. Comment on these words. (Two-Four –All together) (slide 7)

Healthy eating

Eating food that is best for our health should not be boring, time-consuming or expensive. What we eat has to be balanced against practical consideration-price, availability, personal taste, lifestyle.

It is worth getting into a healthier habit of eating. It would help to reduce the risk of  heart disease, high blood pressure, overweight, problems with digestive system.

The sort of changes we might start with are:

Grill food rather than fry them to reduce fat.

Put one less spoonful of sugar in tea or coffee.

Add less salt to food.

Change from white bread to wholemeal to increase fibre intake.

Eat famous Ukrainian national dishes as they are tasty and useful. They are good for health because combine almost everything the human body needs to be healthy. For example Ukrainian borsch contains up to 20 components.

Doctors say that a person, who keeps old Ukrainian traditions in meals, gets everything he needs for health and fruitful mental and physical work.
