Swimming-trunks and a swimsuit;

Trainers (sneekers);

a sports jacket;

a waterproof jacket;

a tracksuit;

knee-length socks;

a ski cap and gloves;

  1. Describe one of these games:
  1. tennis
  2. rugby
  3. table tennis
  4. draughts;
  5. ice hockey
  6. badminton

Use the example:

  1. A game in which two teams hit a large ball with their hands, backwards and forwards over a high net. The ball is not allowed to bounce on the ground. It is a game of volleyball.
  2. A game in which two teams of five players each try to score goals by throwing a large ball through a net fixed to a metal ring at each end of the court. The players bounce the ball while running, and pass it to each other. It is a game of basketball.
  1. Debates

T: Now, pupils, let`s organize debates on the following situation. Divide into two teams.

 The first group is fond of sport and they are great fans of football, volleyball and tennis. They like to watch sport competitions on TV sitting in comfortable arm-chairs and enjoying themselves.

The second group is also keen on these kinds of sport but they prefer to go in for sport training themselves at the stadiums and sports centres rather than simply watching the competitions.

Who is ready to start our debates?

P1: As for me I think to be a good sportsman does not suit everyone.

P2: I don`t share your opinion. I am quite sure that sport does a lot of good.

P3: Besides sport takes a lot of time and energy.

P4: Firstly, to have a healthy mind you must have a healthy body.

P5: I know exactly, it makes you feel unhappy when you loose a game. So, you feel sad.

P6: I suppose you are mistaken. It teaches you not only to loose but to win as well.

P7: I think when you loose a game, you are in low waters.

P8: On the contrary, sport builds a character. It makes you persistent and hard-working.

P9:Frankly speaking, I can`t but agree that sport really causes a lot of troubles.

P10: But I am sure, it makes you a leader.

P11: To my mind, doing sport you can hurt yourself, that`s why I think it`s better to watch sports programs on TV.

P12: I can`t but mention sport makes men but bass.

P13: As for me, Watching sports competitions on TV you needn`t go to the stadium. You can sit in an arm-chair at home and watch your favourite sports programs on TV.

P14: I`m for active sport, as it makes our life more exciting, it makes us healthy, more organized, better disciplined. Sport always keeps us fit and gives us physical activity, liveliness, mobility and gives us much energy. So, that`s why I have made up my mind to go in for tennis. Besides, I must say, I have been going in for aerobics. I am slender, slim, energetic and have a good posture.

  1. Discussion

T: I wonder, children, what role sport plays in your life. Share your experiences.

     Possible answers

P1: As for me I like sport greatly. In summer I like to run, to swim in the sea and play basketball.

P2: In winter I go in for skiing and skating.

P3: I`m a figure-skating fan. I like to skate on the skating-rink in our Sports Centre all the year round.

P4: I also try to watch all figure-skating competitions on TV. To continue my story I must say that I am keen on aerobics. I train myself at home and I always find time in my busy schedule for my regular trainings.

P5: Over the last years aerobics became popular with girls and women. It`s no wonder, it helps us to be slim, healthy and strong.

P6: As for me I know the founder of this kind of sport was a well-known actress Jane Fonda.

P7: To cut my story short I must say that for me sport is essential part of my life and I am very keen on it. I like jogging in the morning and do my physical exercises in the evening. I like to go jogging in the park and breath fresh air.

P8: When I go in for sport I`m always cheerful, active and feel wonderful. That`s why I think that sport is very important in my life.

P9: If you want to be healthy, strong, look beautiful and attractive you should go in for sport.

P10: Speaking about sport I can`t but mention our Physical Training lessons at school. The most popular kinds of sports in our school are volleyball, basketball and football. Our teacher organizes different sports competitions and Olympiads. And one more thing. In winter we spend much time outdoors skating and skiing.

P11: As for me I go in for running. I think running is a wonderful sport .It gives me a good stamina. Besides I do my morning exercises and take a cool shower.

P12: To tell the truth I have chosen volleyball because it needs mobility and much energy. Moreover it keeps a person in a good form. I have my trainings at the sports school three times a week. I have been playing volleyball for three years.  But the more I play the more I like it. I have a good coach. We often take part in volleyball competitions. Finishing my story I must say that sport and physical exercises make us strong and healthy.

  1. Dialogues

T: Read the dialogues and make up your own ones about your favourite kind of sport.

   My favourite team

  • Look! The teams are coming onto the field.
  • Which one is “Shakhtar”?

  • Who scored the goals?
  • ….

Swimming, horse-riding, discus throwing, boxing, running, water polo, 100-metre race, wrestling, figure skating, gymnastics, long jumping, aerobics, skiing, rugby

Athletics

    Athletics ( Br E) or track-and-field (Am E) is the general name given to such kinds of sports as running, long jumping and some others. Athletics includes both track events (= running races) and field events (= sports involving jumping, throwing things, etc. , which are not races).

   Most of track events are named according to distance, for example, She is running in the 400 metres. She is running in a race over a distance of 400 metres. The person who comes first in an event wins a gold medal, the person who comes second wins a silver medal and the person who comes third wins a bronze medal. People usually talk about somebody winning the gold, the silver or the bronze, for example He won the gold in the 100 metres. She won a bronze in the long jumping.

   Athletes compete with their opponents or rivals.

   People who follow the competition are spectators or sports fans.

   They support their team or shout for it.

Text 2

  1. Read the text and say if only the student was wrong.

He was only wrong by two!

 Jack was a football coach at an American college. He always tried to find good football players for his team. Jack trained his players very well. They were good at running, jumping, swimming, rowing and playing different games. They often took part in races and practically always won. All Jack`s players were tall strong men, excellent sportsmen and just nice people. They hardly ever gave him trouble and the college team was the best in their state. Regular training, keeping to a diet and a lot of exercises were very important for the sportsmen. They always followed the coach`s advice and received good and excellent results in all home and international competitions and matches. They seldom lost a game, hardly ever-ended matches in a draw. In fact they practically always won. The only trouble with some of his football players was their bad knowledge of many school subjects because the sportsmen were often poor at Maths or English,  and it was not always easy for them to become college students.

One day the coach brought an excellent young football player to the Professor of the college. The Professor chose very easy questions but the boy couldn`t answer them. At last the Professor asked, “Well, what`s five times seven?” The student thought for a long time and then answered: “Thirty-six”. The Professor shook his head and looked at the coach. “It`s impossible!” he said. “I don`t want to punish your team. I understand he can throw a ball very well but he doesn`t know Mathematics at all. He can`t be a student.” But the coach seriously said: “Oh, please, sir! Let him become a student. He was only wrong by two!”
