Every year more and plants and animals disappear. In many lakes fish are dying. Fishermen are worried because every year there are fewer fish and some lakes have no fish at all. Scientists are beginning to get worried too.  What is killing the fish?

The problem is acid rains. Acid rain is a kind of air pollution. It is caused by factories of that burn coal, or oil, or gas. These factories send smoke high into the air. The wind often carries the smoke far from factories. Some of the harmful substances in the smoke may come with the rain hundreds of miles away.

Of course, all of us want to live in a beautiful, safe and healthy world. And we are aware how important the problem of keeping environment is. We have already learnt about environmental pollution at our lessons and today the 8a form have gathered to discuss and try to solve some aspects of this theme.

The Earth  Hello! I’m your planet. I have come to you to ask for your help. I give you air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat. There are flowers in the fields, they are so pretty. There are birds and animals in the forests and parks. Enjoy everything! But now I’m so unhappy. Help me, please.

  1.               Look, the fish are dying in my seas. Can you help me? Who will help me?
  2.               Look, the factories put chemicals into the air!
  3.               There are many nuclear power stations. I’m afraid of them.

Pupils  the word “environment” means simply what is around us: air, water and land in which people, animals and plants live.

T: What are the most serious environmental problems (слайд №2)?

P: The most serious environmental problems are: pollutions in its many forms, noise from cars, planes, destruction of wild life and countryside beauty, shortage of natural resources, the growth of pollution.

T: What is pollution (слайд №3)?

P: Making water, air, atmosphere dirty and dangerous for people and animals to live in.

T: What is ecology (слайд №4)?

P: Natural balance between plants, animals, people, and their environment.

T: What do you know about the greenhouse effect (слайд №5)?

P: The problem of temperature rise in the earth atmosphere.

T: Why are trees (слайд №6) important for us?

P: Trees make carbon dioxide from the air and produce oxygen.

T: So we can find some solutions of some of earth problems.

Your home tasks for today you’ve done the projects about ecological problem of the day. Now show your projects to the class and described it.

Land Pollution.

When you throw something away, it goes in a garbage can. Once a week a garbage truck comes and the can is emptied, and that's the last you see of it. But what do you think happens to the garbage then? Does it just disappear? No way! Almost all garbage is taken to a garbage dump, or landfill, where the garbage truck empties it onto the ground. After the truck leaves, a big tractor comes along and pushes dirt on top of the garbage. So, most of our garbage is just buried.

Rainforests

I worry most about the rainforests. We learn about it in geography. The forest houses so many varieties of birds and animals that do not exist anywhere else in the world. When they lose their home they become extinct. We should grow our own trees if we want to cut them down to make the paper.

Nuclear energy

I think the most important issue is nuclear power. Its waste is not disposed well. This is problem because it takes so long – thousands of years to become safe. We can’t predict what will happen in the future. I think the government should close down the nuclear plants and stop producing nuclear waste. But I think that the Earth has a way of getting round these things.

The Green solution

There are four green solutions. They all use natural energy already in the environment: wild energy, solar energy from the sun, wave energy from the sea, geothermal energy from  hot rocks under earth.

Acid rain

One of Europe and North America’s most dangerous pollution problems is acid rain. What happens is this. First factories send gases and chemicals into the air. There they mix and carried for hundreds of miles by the wind. Finally they fall back to earth when it rains.  This acid rain kills fish and trees. It slowly destroys building too.

The green solutions

Industrial countries should control their level of pollution. This is already happening in some parts of Europe. There several countries have cut acid rain pollution by 30%.

 

 

 

Wildlife

Animals are a part of the environment, too. Millions of them are killed or treated cruelly by men every year.  Animals in danger because their environments in danger. Animals shouldn’t suffer. The cruelty must stop.

E-numbers.

E-numbers is a general name for a group of chemicals which sometimes are added to food.. They are much cheaper.

The chemicals of E-number group give the food a better color, a long time of preservation and a better look. They may be dangerous for our health because diseases start if there is a certain quantity of E-numbers in your body. How can you learn if there are E-numbers in the nice western product, which you want to buy? Look at the bar code. If you see numbers with E before figures, it means that dangerous chemicals were used to produce the food. Do you need E-numbers in your body? Then buy the foreign products with them.

T: We are constantly destroying our home – or planet. Now there are a lot of ecological problems.

I invite guests and one of them is the representative of the international organization “green peace” and you can imagine that you journalists and ask question to them.

 HI! I am Helen White. I am a representative of the one of the most known international organization called “Green Peace”. Our organization was founded in 1970 for protecting the ecology of our planet. The aim of green peace is in its name. One of the main spheres of activity of our organization is the protecting of animal world. Now more than one hundred kinds of animals had disappeared from the Earth. We struggle against whale killing. The other problems are air, water and land pollution. Earth is our home and we must take care of it.

T: Dear journalists! Do you have any questions to Helen?

P: Tom Smith “Washington post». Tell us more about animals disappearing.

Helen: I invite our ecologist Mr. Peter Brown.

Ecologist: Hi! I am Peter Brown. I am ecologist. Now I give you some interesting facts: by the year 2030 25% of all animals, birds, fish and insects may be extinct. A horrible fact isn’t it? What are the main reasons for it? Look here.  (слайд №10)

The first is hunting. We kill animals for their meat, skin, fur; the second is environment itself (it changes) and the last is pollution of air, water, land.

Well, does anybody have any questions?

P: Мy name is Peter Steward. I am a journalist from “News”. What animals can disappear?

E: A lot of animals are extinct now. That can happen to elephants, zebras, robins and other animals if we are not careful.

P: What can you tell about air pollution?

E: Speaking  about air we breathe, we need a specialist and I want to introduce  the manager of a big chemical plant.

M: Hi! My name is Ann Forest. The answer is easy. People began to build factories and plants. They began to drive cars. The factories like cars, put a lot of harmful gases into the air become polluted.

J: Do you control the emissions?

M: We control the emissions but you know not all emissions are controlled.

J: what happens when gas and harmful stuffs are put into the air?

M: In the air they can mix with rain or snow and form acid rains fall to earth.

J: Is acid rain harmful?

M: Yes it is. It’s very harmful to plants, rivers, lakes and people.

J: How can we stop these acid rains?

M: The way out is to drive our cars less and the plants must control their level of pollution. I’ll invite the///

S: The most part of our planet is water. Oceans cover the biggest part of our land. But we don’t keep the water clean. In many places the water is polluted. Rivers and lakes are polluted by garbage and chemical harmful stuffs. We need to safe our water, to keep it clean and healthy, so people, plants, animals could drink it. And so fish and other creatures would have a place to live in.

J: Do you think the sea is getting more polluted?

S: It happens every day.

J: Why do we have these problems with the pollution of the water?

S: We have these problems because people only worry when they want to swim and they don’t want to see other problems.

T: Thank you. As you know, people have (слайд №11) 2 environment problems: one is the world around us and the other is their own bodies. We have already spoken about the influence of the environment. And now let’s speak about health problems. We need a doctor to speak about this.

D: Now the health of people becomes weaker. There are a lot of points that influence the man’s health. I want to present you a little table. Look here. (слайд №13)

And what is the way out of this situation? It is the healthy way of life, life without smoking and with physical exercises.

I think it’s time to have moving activity.

The Earth

All of you are very active, showed a good knowledge of ecology words, used the imagination in designing posters. But the  most important thing for me is that now I am sure that you are the first really green generation and want to protect me – your planet.
