Topic: What’s up in the sky?
Objectives:
Visual materials: a globe, a torch, a computer (laptop), a smart board (TV), software.
Procedure
Good morning! Glad to see you here today.
T.: Tell me what’s (up) in the sky today? Is it cloudy? Is it rainy? Etc. What can (can’t) you see up there?
Ss: The sun.
Look at the title of the lesson: “What’s up in the sky?”
T.: That’s what we’re going to talk about. What is the sun?
Ss: It’s a big star. It gives us light. It’s hot.
T.: And what is the Earth?
Ss: It’s our planet. We live on it. It consists of water and land.
T.: You know that the Earth goes two ways. What’s the word for turning around the axis?
Ss: It’s rotate.
T.: What’s the word when it travels around the sun?
Ss: It revolves.
T: What happens when the Earth rotates?
Ss: We have day and night.
T: How many hours does it take to rotate?
Ss: It takes 24 hours.
T: Let’s see how it works.
(a torch and a globe). (A teacher shows how it works with help of a globe and a torch)
What happens when the Earth revolves?
Ss: There are 4 seasons.
T: Let’s see how it works.
(a torch and a globe). (A teacher shows how it works with help of a globe and a torch)
How many days does it take to go around the sun?
Ss: It takes 365 days.
T: But the Earth is not the only planet. There are more. The sun and the planets are called the Solar System. Listen to a short text and find out a synonym to the word revolve and the names of inner and outer planets.(On Screen 1)
(The pupils are listening to the text and do after listening activities).
Ss: The synonym to the word revolves is orbit.
T: Now your task is to put planets into the correct order.
(Students put the names of the planets on the blackboard in the correct order).
T: What are these (inner) planets?
Ss: They are called inner planets. They are made of rocks and metal.
T: What are these (outer) planets?
Ss: They are called outer planets. They are made of gases.
T: There are 2 texts in each group. One is in your books at page 52 and the other is the copy (On Screen 1 Unit 7 CLIL Science). Your task is to compare the information in two texts. Moreover (beside this) every group has its questions to answer.
Group 1 – find 2 different facts.
Group 2 – find 3 new facts
Group 3 – find 4 the same facts.
You have approx. 5 min.
Students tell their answer aloud.
T: There is a text in every group. (listen to the text)(On Screen 1 Unit 7 CLIL Science) Fill in the gaps. The team which finishes first gets the points.
Let’s practice. Here is the game “Cross and knouts”.
