ІІ. Writing.
Read the letter , make up and glue the list of things you can get to know about the National Gallery in London in the card with the same name.
Hi, Nina!
How are you? Sorry , I haven’t written for so long, but I’ve been busy settling in and getting ready for my studies. Anyway, things are a bit calmer now and I can spare some time to write you a letter. I would like to tell you about my last visit to London , especially the visit to the London National Gallery.
You know, the London National Gallery is situated on the north side of Trafalgar Square which is famous for its monument to Admiral Nelson, its fountains and pigeons. The gallery is a long, low building in a classic style and it contains Britain’s best- known collection of pictures. Can you imagine it?
I wonder that the National Gallery was founded in 1824 and houses the national collection of Western Europe in painting: over 2,000 pictures from 1260 to 1900. The Collection represents all the major European schools of painting and includes masterpieces by virtually all the great artists. The tourist guide told us that each year National Gallery and some other of British or foreign galleries exchange paintings in an agreement. Admission to the Gallery is free as well as to other British National Galleries and museums, which are maintained by money voted by the Parliament.
As for me, you will be interested in the gallery arrangement. It is arranged by period in four wings:
The first is Sainsbury Wing: Painting from 1260 to 1510 including Piero della Francesca (The Baptism of Christ, 1437), Botticelli (Venus and Mars, 1485), Leonardo da Vinci, Bellini (Doge Leonardo Loredan, 1501),and Raphael (The Madonna of the Pinks, 1506).
The second is West Wing: Painting from 1510 to 1610 including Cranach, Michelangelo, Holbein (The Ambassadors, 1533), Titian (Bacchus and Ariadne,1520), Bronzino,Veronese and El Creco.
The third is North Wing: Painting from 1600 to 1700 including Rubens (Samson and Delilah,1609), Van Dyck (Equestrian Portrait of Charles I, 1637), Poussin, Claude (Seaport with the Embarkation of Saint Ursula, 1641), Velazques (The Toilet of Venus ('The Rokeby Venus'), 1651), Rembrandt (Self Portrait at the Age of 34, 1640) and Vermeer (A Young Woman standing at a Virginal,1670)
The fourth is East Wing: Painting from 1700 to 1900 including Gainshorough (Mr and Mrs Andrews, 1750), Turner (The Fighting Temeraire tugged to her last berth to be broken up, 1838, 1839), Constable ( The Hay Wain, 1821), Monet (Bathers at La Grenouillère, 1869), Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh (The Sunflowers, 1888) and Seurat (Bathers at Asnières, 1884).
I was really impressed by all these masterpieces, paintings from different periods of time. I really enjoyed the time of being in the gallery. Will you visit the National gallery with me? I hope you will be admire like me.
Well, that’s all for now. See you soon.
Best wishes,
Valya
