Greeting Cards

 Greeting cards are the elements of any culture. Their value is in their  message. They reflect different feelings, such as: love, friendship, warmth and sympathy. They can be also used just for greetings.

The first greeting cards came into use in the United States in the late 1800”s. The first cards were prepared and sold in Boston, Massachusetts.

The idea of the first greeting card was invented by Henry Cole in the mid - 19-th century, who worked as a museum director at that time. Every year he used to send short notes to his friends at Christmas. In 1843 he was short of time and could not write greeting letters to his friends. So, he asked a famous artist to design a card with a message. Thus, John C. Horsley was the first person to create a greeting card. This fact helped to produce a new tradition and a billion-dollar industry, which is very popular nowadays

New Year's Day and Christmas

. Each season has different holidays. In winter there are many holidays. Some of them are connected with religion. January is rich in holidays. It takes its name from Janus, the Roman God of beginnings, endings, openings and closings. It also symbolizes leaving the old for the new. That is why we celebrate New Year's Day on January, 1. People celebrate it differently depending on  local customs, family traditions and personal tastes.

But, the most popular winter holiday is Christmas. It is widely observed in many countries. Ukrainians celebrate it on January, 7 but in some countries it is celebrated on December, 25. Some days before these holidays people send greeting cards to their friends and relatives. Here are some of them.

St. Valentine's Day

Another holiday observed in winter is St. Valentine Day. It is marked on February, 14 every year. It is a holiday when we greet our sweethearts. It has a long and interesting history. The holiday is aimed at expressing our affection for each other. Nowadays it is done with presents and, of course, greeting cards, called “Valentines”. The words  are both light, merry, and sometimes humorous, satiric or serious. The examples are given below.
