Lesson Plan:

Theme: Comparative Characteristics of the Geographical Location of Ukraine and the United Kingdom (CLIL Methodology - Content and Language Integrated Learning)

Lesson Objectives:

1. Content Objectives:

- Analyze the geographical location of Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

   - Identify and compare geographical features such as size, borders, climate, and natural resources.

   - Understand the impact of geography on culture and economy in both countries.

2. Language Objectives:

   - Enhance students' English vocabulary related to geography (e.g., climate, borders, neighboring countries, natural resources).

   - Practice using comparative and superlative forms in English.

   - Develop speaking, reading, and listening skills through interactive tasks.

3. Skills Development:

   - Critical thinking and comparison skills.

   - Teamwork and communication in English.

 

Lesson Procedure:

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes):

   - Activity: Geo Quiz 

     Students work in pairs to answer quick questions about Ukraine and the UK. Example:

     - What is the capital of the UK? 

     - What seas border Ukraine?

 Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and engage students.

2. Presentation (15 minutes):

   - Activity: Teacher presents a brief comparison of Ukraine and the UK's geographical locations using visuals (maps, slides). Key points include:

     - Location (hemisphere, neighbouring countries).

     - Size and population.

     - Climate differences.

     - Key natural resources.

 

 - Language Focus: Highlighting key comparative phrases (e.g., larger than, surrounded by, more diverse than).

3. Practice (20 minutes):

   - Interactive Game: "Who Knows More?"* 

     Students are organized  into teams and answer questions based on the presentation. Example:

     - Which country has a milder climate?

     - Name one neighbouring country of Ukraine and one of the UK.

 

 - Group Work: Students use a Venn diagram to compare the geographical features of both countries.

 

4. Production (15 minutes):

   - Activity: Role Play 

  Students work in pairs: one acts as a Ukrainian student, and the other as a British student. They discuss the benefits and challenges of their country's geographical location using comparative sentences.

Lesson Summary (5 minutes):

   - Recap the key similarities and differences between Ukraine and the UK.

   - Highlight the importance of geographical features in shaping a country's culture and economy.

 

Reflection (5 minutes):

   Activity: "One Thing I Learned"* 

 Students write one thing they learned about Ukraine and one about the UK, sharing with the class.

 

Homework:

1. Write a short essay (100–120 words) comparing the geographical location of Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

2. Create a poster or infographic illustrating the main geographical features of either Ukraine or the UK.

 

 

This CLIL lesson integrates content and language learning, ensuring students engage with geography while practicing English skills.
