THANKSGIVING
On the fourth Thursday of November, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving day. It is a national holiday celebrated in the United States of America every year.
Thanksgiving day is a day for many Americans to be thankful for what they have.
It is also a special day when families get together for a large meal.
About one hundred brave men, women, and children decided to sail across the Atlantic Ocean in 1620 to settle in a "New World." They were called Pilgrims.
They traveled on a ship called the Mayflower. They traveled the ocean for 66 days and finally arrived in America on Plymouth Rock.
It was a cold winter. The Pilgrims did not have enough food. By the end of winter only 52 of them had survived.
When spring came, the Pilgrims had to learn to feed themselves. Native Americans taught them how to grow food. Native Americans knew how to survive and grow food on this land. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. Since then, Americans gather to have a meal and be thankful.
I am thankful for my family because they take great care of me.
I am thankful for my friends because they make me laugh.
I am thankful for my teachers because they teach me new things every day.
