Charles Dickens. "A Christmas Carol". The dynamics of Scrooge's image, the reasons of his spiritual rebirth.

Theme: Charles Dickens. "A Christmas Carol". The dynamics of Scrooge's image, the reasons of his spiritual rebirth.

Type of lesson: application of knowledge, skills.

Teacher: Ilyina S.V., an English teacher, the ІІ category.

Purpose:

•            to trace the dynamics of Scrooge’s image, to determine the reasons for his spiritual rebirth;

•            to develop skills:
  •                express your opinion about what you read,
  •                confirm your opinion with quotations from the text,
  •                characterize the image of the main character;
  •                develop students' creative abilities;

•            to form:
  •                understanding that money is not the most important thing in a person's life,
  •                the desire to honor traditions and customs,
  •                the desire to eradicate anger, misery, rudeness, selfishness.

Form of conducting: traditional lesson.

Methods and techniques: mind map, drawing up the associative bush “Christmas gifts”, discussion, questionnaire, working in groups, creative task, verbal drawing, mini-debate, interactive exercise "Microphone", drawing a logical scheme.

Students will know:

•                 features of celebrating Christmas in Ukraine and England,
•                 the causes of Scrooge's spiritual rebirth.

Students will be able to:

•                 characterize the image of the main character,
•                 identify the positive and negative traits of Scrooge’s character,
•                 make an associative bush, logic circuit,
•                 work in groups.

Equipment: story text "A Christmas Carol", handouts, illustrations for the work, a multimedia board, a computer.

I.  Warm-up. Aim.

ET: Good morning boys and girls! Today at our lesson we are going to speak about the English literature. You’ll read, do some tasks and share your opinions on the theme.

1. Mind map.

УЗЛ: Але спочатку давайте прочитаємо епіграф нашого уроку, розкажіть, як ви його розумієте.

ET: What is kindness for you? (Ps share their opinions). Let’s make a mind map with your answers.

2. ET: Now I want you to remember the name of the author whose book we’ve just finished reading.   It’s Charles Dickens. You’ve read his book, but do you know much about the writer himself?   I’m not sure and that’s why I want to offer you the following task. You’ll watch the presentation about Charles Dickens and while watching you‘ll mark information with special signs such as “a tick V” for information you know, “+” – for information you have learned, and ”?” – for what you’d like to know, then you’ll have to fill in a table.”  (Ps watch the presentation and fill in a table).

II. Main part of the lesson.

УЗЛ: Різдво - одне з найбільш шанованих релігійних свят у світі. Цього дня у Віфлеємі народився Ісус Христос, якого Бог послав на Землю, щоб спокутувати гріхи та врятувати людство ("Ісус" єврейською означає "порятунок"). Цей день буквально розділив історію людства на "до" і "після" (н.е.). З Різдва Христового починається сучасний відлік часу.

ET: Despite the peculiarities of the traditions of celebrating Christmas in different nations, nowadays almost all of them are united by some common symbols. In the Slavic lands, Christmas merged with the ancient Slavic rite - Christmastide (that eventually became Christmas). It was considered the funniest time of the year: young people gathered for mass festivities, sang songs, told stories. In England there is a tradition on the night before Christmas to light the candle at all the windows. In Serbia, people burn an oak twig and see how many sparkles are there: "The more sparkles, the more happiness and money, and joy will be in the house." In Spain, before the Christmas service of God everyone dance, holding hands, in front of the temple. In India, Christians decorate mango or banana for Christmas tree.

УЗЛ: Перед вами на дошці ви бачите  ялинку. Вона не прикрашена. Отже, зараз ми маємо підготувати її до свята. У вас є різнокольорові іграшки. Запишіть на них ті риси характеру, які б ви хотіли розвивати, і щоб вони стали найкращими різдвяними подарунками для ваших батьків. Тепер прикрасьте ними нашу ялинку. (Діти прикріплюють іграшки до ялинки, роздатковий матеріал №1, 2)

2. ET: Today we will continue to work on the study of Charles Dickens' story "A Christmas Carol”. Our main task is to characterize the image of Scrooge, to identify the causes of his spiritual rebirth.

     Let's watch a trailer from the film “A Christmas Carol”  by Charles Dickens. And after that, we will try together to determine the basic moral principles that a person must have.

ET: Now, let's get back to the work of Charles Dickens's “A Christmas Carol”. You have read the story, so you can easily answer these simple questions (work in groups).

- Who did you enjoy the most? Why?

- Who didn’t you like? Why?

- How did Ebenezer Scrooge treat Christmas? Find and read the relevant quote.
