Objectives :

• to develop oral fluency through discussion;
• to develop listening comprehension skills;
• to enlarge vocabulary on the topic;
• to develop skills in expressing ideas logically;
• to develop aesthetic taste;
• to develop the filling of responsibility for the group.\;
• to develop attention linguistic guessing;

Equipment : a scheme, pictures on the topic, cards for reading, grammar cards and recording of the song « Yesterday».

 

PROCEDURE

1. Introduction. Greeting

Teacher : Good morning boys and girls. Glad to see you. Sit down. Are you ready to start?

Pupils : Yes, sure.

Teacher : So let’s begin ( Listening to the song «Yesterday»)

Nice tune, isn’t it?

Pupils: Yes, of course.

Teacher : Do you know what is it? Who is the singer?

Pupil 1 : Certainly, everybody knows it. It is the famous «Yesterday» written

and performed  by the legendary group «Beatles» from Liverpool, Great Britain.

Teacher :  So the plot of our lesson deals with one of the most popular arts of nowadays  - music.

         In the course of our lesson we’ll revise some words and expressions you will need for discussion. We’ll play some short dialogues concerning you tastes in music. We’ll do some  exercises as far as reading and grammar  are  concerned.

 

                Warming up

Teacher : Answer the questions.

1. What type of music do you like to listen to?
2. What role  does music play  in people’s life? In your life?
3. Where do you go if you want to enjoy listening to music? Do you like to go to these places alone or with your friends? Why?
4. What types  of music are the most popular nowadays?

Teacher : So music is one of the most popular arts nowadays.

To speak about music you will need some words and expressions. Make sure that you know them. Listen to my definition  and  give your English equivalents:

• someone who writes music or plays  musical instruments ( a musician);
• someone who makes up songs and music ( a composer);
• someone who sings ( a singer);
• a group of people who play different instruments in the theatre or the  concert hall ( orchestra);
• a person who leads the orchestra ( a conductor);
• a group of people who play  popular music ( a band);
• to prepare musical instruments for the  performance ( to tune);
• to drill playing a musical instrument ( to rehearse);
• a group of people who gathered to listen to music ( audience);
• to play for the audience ( to perform).

     

 Teacher: Ok. The word of music is marvelous and appealing. Do you agree with    me ? Do you like  listening  to music?  

 Pupils : Yes, sure.

 

2. Main Part

 

                Vocabulary Revision

Teacher : Now make a mind map and tell us: “Why people listen to the music"

 And what music styles do you know? What adjectives can we use to describe music styles?

Тeacher : Read the text and answer the questions.

 

People can’t live without music. They can listen to it everywhere even in the forest when they walk and hear birds’ singing.

 Music can be classical and modern. Classical music is performed by symphonic orchestras, it is serious and requires good understanding. Some people, especially teenagers, think that classical music is boring and dull. But they are not right!

Most people prefer modem music. There are different kinds of modern music: pop, rock, disco, rap, techno and others. Young people like pop, disco and rap. Older people prefer jazz, rock and pop.

Teacher : Answer the questions.

            Speaking

Teacher : Now work in pairs. Role-play short dialogues according to these cards.

( The teacher gives the cards to the pairs of pupils and explains their roles. Pupils are making up dialogues).

One of you has just come from Egypt. Another one hasn’t left Ukraine. Discuss musical tastes in Egypt and in Ukraine.

 

            Practicing Grammar. Writing.

 

Teacher : Jazz is a popular genre of music It is more important that jazz is listened and enjoyed all over the world. When the  situation is like this we use Passive constructions in the sentences. So the task is fill in the gaps with necessary forms of the Passive voice.

 

Jazz

 

      Have you ever heard about jazz? We are sure you have. Jazz is a type of music and the only art that _______ ( to create) in the  United States. Jazz _______ ( to create) by the black Americans. Many blacks _______( to bring) from Africa to America as slaves. Different native songs _______ ( to sing) by the black slaves and the music of their homeland _______ ( to play) in America.

       Jazz is a mixture of many different kinds of music. It _______

( to make up) of the music of West Africa? The work songs of the slaves and religious music. The first jazz bands _______ ( to form) at the end of the 19^th  century. They played in bars and clubs in many towns and

cities of the South , especially New Orleans.

      With time jazz became more and more popular. Today jazz _______
