Topic: The World of Cinema and Theatre

Objectives: by  the  end  of  the  lesson  the  students

  • will  be  aware  of  the  new  topical  vocabulary;
  • will  have  practised  the  new  words  in  speaking ;
  • will  have  further  developed  their  skills  of creative thinking and imagination;
  • will  have  further  developed  their  communicative skills ;
  • will  have  practised  pair  work  and  group work;
  • will  be  inspired  by  a  new  leisure  activity.

Equipment: various texts, cards on the topic, pictures, charts,  notebook, multimedia projector, presentation.

 

                                       Lesson  Procedure

 

1. Introducing  the topic

T: Today we are going  to guess the topic of our lesson.

a)  I’ll give you 6 clues :

  1. I was born at the beginning of the 20th century.
  2. At first I didn’t speak.
  3. Thanks to me, there are lots of stars.
  4. I’m the seventh art.
  5. You have to pay to see me.
  6. Where do you go to see a film?

 

The cinema

b) Now we are going to guess another part of our topic. Look at the poets words.

All  the  world’s  stage

And  all  the  men  and  women  merely  players.

They  have  their  exits  and  their  entrances

And  one  man  in  his  time  plays  many  parts.

 

Do you know who is this poet? 

William  Shakespeare,  a  great  English  poet  and  playwright. He wrote  in  one 

      of  his  plays such words.

So what is the topic of our lesson?

The World of Cinema and Theatre

T. Today we are going to talk about cinema and theatre. Cinema and TV films have become an important part in our life. We like going to the theatre too. Theatre is a place where you can see a play staged. It is also one of entertainments. We are to admit that theatre is not popular now as it used to be. But still there are hundreds of theatres where the audiences are exited at the prospect of seeing a play and the actors are most encouraged by the warm reception

2. Warming  up

Poems 

Students read the poem, then the teacher clean from the blackboard some words and 2-3 students tell or act the poem.

 Do you like Sharon?

Sharon who?

Yes, of course I do.

Do you know her films?

Yes, of course I do.

They are “Basic Instinct - 1”

and “Basic Instinct - 2”

Do you like Bruce?

Bruce who?

Bruce  Willis

Yes, of course I do.

Do you know his films?

Yes, of course I do.

They are “Nut - 1”

and “Nut - 2”

Do you like Andriy?

Andriy who?

Andriy Mironov

Yes, of course I do.

Do you know his films?

Yes, of course I do.

They are “Straw Hat”

and “Diamond Hand” too.

 Then students may take another actor or actress and their films according to the rhyme.

 

3. Revising vocabulary

T:Look at the following pictures.

-What do they mean?

-What can we speak about looking at them?

O.K. We’ll speak about cinema and theatre.

-What do they teach us?

(Students’ possible answers: live in friendship, they teach us how to live, make friends, laugh, cry, frighten, surprise).

      Look at the screen. What are cinema and theatre for you? Give your suggestions.

Game “Who is the quickest to say?”

Teamwork. There are 2 teams (3-5 players).

1. A place we watch films.

Cinquain

The pattern:

  1. Noun
  2. 2 adjectives
  3. 3 present participles
  4. a four(six)-word phrase
  5. synonym (in line 1)

4. Which is better?

T: Now  you  are  going  to  do  some  group work.

 There are 2 groups. The question is: Which is better cinema or theatre? Each group must argue for one position.

 5. Agree/ Disagree.

Teacher posts signs around the room saying “Agree”, “Disagree” and “Don’t know”. The statement is: Cinemas are less popular nowadays as people watch TV and films on computer. Students must stand by the sign that stands for their opinion and give reasons for opinions.

 

 6. Find Someone Who

  • Who likes watching films
  • Who likes watching performances
  • Who likes reading books

Students, by asking questions must get the names of classmates who likes such

things.

 

 

 

  1. Critical Thinking

Think and start speaking. Time for preparation 1 minute.

  • If you had to star in a movie, who would you like to be your co–star? Why?

 

 

  1. Homework. Role-play

Make a dialogue.

  1. You want to go and see new comedy
  2. You want to watch an action film
