Majority of B answer.
Television isn't very important for you. It's no problem to give it up if there's something more interesting to do. But if you have to stay at home you watch whatever's on that night. So, be careful not to be too superficial in choise!
Majority of C answer.
You've got an active relationship with TV. You have a good critical sense and know how to choose programmes. Be careful not to give TV too much importance and don't let it influence your language and way of life too much. Sometimes it's better to read a book.

So the topic of our lesson is “TV or not TV” and “What’s on TV”
And our task is to ………………….
I suggest you to imagine that we are participants of the chat show “Everyone should be involved”.
And the motto of our chat show will be «So many men, so many minds» (proverb).
How do you understand this proverb?
T: Today we are going to discuss the topic “TV or not TV”. We’ll find advantages and disadvantages of it. We join into two groups. One group, at the end of the lesson, we’ll present us benefits and another we’ll present harms of the TV.
We are going to meet different guests with their problems and in our studio. You’ll ask them questions and then give your opinions.
Let’s greet our first guest.
First of all, introduce yourself.
M: I’m Maxim. I’m the eighth former and I study at gymnasium. I live in a small quiet town, Skadovsk. In my free time I like watching TV and that is the problem for my parents. They don’t want me to watch TV.
S: What do you like to watch?
M: I like watching quiz shows, historic film and cartoons.
S: Do you think they are useful for you?
M: I think that quiz shows enrich my outlook and give me additional information, encourage me to become more educated and intelligent.
S: And what about historic films? Aren’t they cruel?
M: In my opinion, they are not cruel. I learn a lot of new facts from historic films.
T: Give your opinions.
S: I personally think that Maxim is right. TV helps us to educate and learn something new.
S: And I think that some programmes help children to prepare for lessons.
S: I also agree with Maxim, but children no longer read books. I suppose that reading is a key to education.
S: And I want to say about cartoons. Some of them are too silly. They can’t teach anything.
T: We have another guest in studio. It’s Maxim’s elder brother.
Y: My name is Yevhenii. I’m 22 years old. And I’m Maxim’s brother. I live with parents and brother. I work in an office. I work very hard and I’m always tired. TV helps me to relax.
S: What programmes do you like watching?
Y: I like watching films, chat shows and reality shows. Sometimes I watch programmes in English. I want to improve it.
S: How do you think these programmes are useful for you?
Y: As I’ve just said, I watch them to relax and entertain myself.
T: So your opinions.
S: I agree with Yevhenii. TV can really help you to relax after a hard day’s work.
S: I personally believe that TV helps us to escape from stress and problems.
S: We’ve heard that Yevhenii improves his language skills with the help of TV.
S: You could be right, but Yevhenii can go for a walk with his friends and breathe fresh air. It can relax him and would be useful for his health.
T: Thanks a lot. Yevhenii, you can take your sit among the participants of our show.
And our next guest is Yevhenii and Maxim’s mother. You’re welcome.
M: My name is Aliona and I’m 39 years old. I’m a teacher.
When I come home, I’m usually very tired, but I begin doing my housework. And as for my boys they have no time to help me because of their favourite programmes. I’m very worried about the effect of TV on them There are a lot of rubbish. Some violent programmes and films make children violent.
S: I personally think that Aliona is right. TV is a waste of time. Some people have an addiction to the television and become lazier.
S: I want to disagree with Aliona, it hasn’t proven that there is a connection between the violence on TV and violence in the world.
S: And why don’t you watch TV and have a rest with your sons?
M: But I have no time. After I do the housework I begin to prepare my lesson plans.
S: In my opinion, the boys must help you. The fact is that you couldn’t teach them to help. You should think about it.
S: You should limit the time they spend in front of TV.
T: Thanks a lot. Aliona, take your sit among the participants of our show.
And now let’s have a break and watch some advertisements.
(Advertisements – video)
T: By the way, what do you think about advertisements? Are they useful?
S: I think that advertisements give us iformation about different products and it makes easier to choose things to buy.
S: On the other hand, advertisements make people to buy things they don’t need, don’t talk about the products’ defects, show life unrealistically.
T: Thanks a lot. Our next guest is Vitalii. Aliona’s husband. Let’s listen to him.
F: My name’s Vitalii. I’m 41. I’m Yevhenii and Maxim’s father. I’m a sailor. I often do on business trip. But when I’m at home I see that my children spend a lot of time in front of TV. They watch everything instead of the news. I think that the news is useful. We can know about people and events in our country and in other world.
S: I agree with you, but on the other hand, it’s not recommended to watch the news to people which are nervous, because there is a lot of cruelty in the world, diseases, accidents and so on.
F: OK. And can you imagine that they like to eat while watching TV?
S: Oh, it’s not good. They could have problems with their health.
T: And about problems with health our doctor will tell.
D: Television is doing a lot of harm and may lead to poor health.
- Television may lead to poor health, through rushed meals, lack of sleep, lack of exercise and eyestrain.
- Many boys and girls watch TV on Sunday afternoon, when outside activities would do them so much good.
- If you do watch TV too long you could soon be wearing glasses.
Now, we’ll revise grammar: Conditionals Type 2. The structure of it is
If past simple, I would + infinitive
Give advice to all the guests of our studio. Complete the sentences.
If I were Maxim, I would ……………………
If I were Yevhenii, I would ……………….
If I were their mother, I would…………..
If I were their father, I would ……………
Read the text and in groups write the advantages of TV and disadvantages.
Watching TV, you know, is the perfect way to spend our free time. Do you agree? Or maybe you don’t?
It’s a well-known fact that TV has good and bad sides.
First of all it keeps people informed; we can learn a lot of information watching TV. We can choose programs that appeal to us more, because TV provides programs for all interests. Sometimes with the help of TV we can relax, entertain ourselves, especially when we are tired.
Advertisement on TV gives us information about different products, and it makes it easier to choose things to buy. When we watch TV we learn something new about the world, famous people and recent news.
But, on the other hand, TV has a lot of disadvantages. It takes a lot of time and it makes us lazy. Besides, it’s very harmful for our health, especially for our eyes. Some violent programs and films on TV make people violent. Violence becomes a vital problem in our days.
There is too much advertisement on TV. Sometimes it can encourage us to buy things we don’t need at all. Watching TV takes all free time from almost all people. We just watch it, not concentrate, and waste time.
So, we can’t say exactly whether it’s useful to watch TV or not, as TV has its advantages and disadvantages.
Millions people in the world spend hours watching TV every day… But what for? Do people really think it’s the best way to spend time?
Many people become TV-addicted and it’s really a problem of our time. But the fact is that “so many people, so many minds!”
And what do you think?
How do you think what the idea of this text is.
