CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
Why did he want to sail west?
Columbus knew that Earth was round, and he thought that he would find a quicker and easier route to the east. He thought that the Earth was smaller than it is, and he did not know about America.
What ships did he use?
In 1492, Columbus set sail from Palos in Spain with tree ships, which were between fifteen and thirty-six metres long. Altogether, they carried about ninety men.
What did he find?
They sailed across the Atlantic Ocean for ten weeks. Then a sailor called Rodrigo Bernajo saw land, although Columbus said that he himself had seen it first. He landed on a small island, which Columbus called San Salvador. Columbus called all people that he met “Indians” because he was sure that he had reached India. Actually, he hadn’t. He had landed on some islands which are called the West Indies because of mistake. They are just east of the great continent of America. Although Columbus is known as the man who “discovered” America, he never set foot on its land.
