ВІДПОВІДІ

Exercise 1

1 is taken: The first sentence uses the present simple. So we need the present simple of be in the second sentence, plus the past participle of the verb take.

2 has been opened: The first sentence uses the present perfect simple. So we need the present perfect simple of be in the second sentence, plus the past participle of the verb open.

3 was sold : The first sentence uses the past simple. So we need the past simple of be in the second sentence, plus the past participle of the verb sell.

4 have been eaten: The first sentence uses the present perfect simple. So we need the present perfect simple of be in the second sentence, plus the past participle of the verb eat. N.B. has eaten in the first sentence is singular because of someone (sing.), but in the second sentence it becomes have been eaten because of sandwiches (pl).

5 was : The first sentence uses the past simple. So we need the past simple of be in the second sentence. In this question, the past participle of the main verb has already been given.

6 hasn’t been cleaned: The first sentence uses the present perfect simple. So we need the present perfect simple of be in the second sentence, plus the past participle of the verb clean.

7 are turned off: The first sentence uses the present simple. So we need the present simple of be in the second sentence, plus the past participle of the verb turn.

8 must be shown: This sentence is more difficult, as it uses the modal verb must. So we need must + the infinitive of be and the past participle of leave.

Exercise 2

1 isn’t collected: The sentence is talking about something that happens regularly – every day – so we need to use the present simple negative of be + past participle of collect.

2 were these houses built: The question is asking about something that happened in the past, so we need the past simple plural of be – to agree with houses – and the past participle of build.

3 was paid: The sentence has a definite past time reference – last Saturday – so we need the past simple of be + the past participle of pay.

4 hasn’t been fixed: The use of yet in the sentence means we need to use the present perfect, so we need the present perfect negative of be and the past participle of fix.

5 is driven: The sentence is talking about something that happens regularly – in the mornings – so we need to use the present simple of be + past participle of drive.

6 Was this play written: The question is asking about something that happened in the past, so we need the past simple of be and the past participle of write.

7 have to be turned: This example is more difficult as it uses a modal verb have to. So we need present tense of have to + the infinitive of be and the past participle of turn.
