Let’s come back to the history of London and remember what happened many, many years ago.
Pupil: Many years ago the Romans came to England . I know that they built the town on the river Thames . The name of his town was Londinium. The Romans built Londinium near the river. They built a bridge over the river . Also they built roads to other parts of Britain.
Teacher: What do you know about 1066?
Pupil: I would like to say that in 1066 William the Conqueror and his people came to England from Normandy in France. William became the King of London .Many of his people lived in England that’s why he built the Tower of London to live in it.
Teacher: What do you know about 1749?
Pupil: Until 1749 there was only one bridge over the river - London Bridge. I must say the old London Bridge looked very strange. There were houses and shops on the bridge. In the 19th century there were many new bridges in London. Now there are 27 bridges over the Thames.

3.6. Work with a map. A sightseeing tour .
Teacher: Dear pupils! I know that you have never been to London. But we have a good chance to go to London. Close your eyes and imagine that you are going by bus about London . What kind of bus is it? ( It is a bus which has two floors and it is red colour).
Teacher: Yes, it is a red double –decker. I am a bus driver and you are guides now.
( Учитель готує заздалегідь копію тексту, розрізає його на логічні відрізки та послідовно нумерує. Учні виступають у ролі екскурсоводів).
Teacher: Here are the tour guide’s notes for part of the tour. All of them have their numbers. Take one of them , look it through and be ready to talk about in turn. Let’s see London most famous sights from our red double-decker. We start from Trafalgar Square.
Pupil 1: Trafalgar Square is the main square of central London, where a number of famous buildings and monuments , including the National Gallery and Nelson’s Column are situated. The square is popular with visitors , who come to relax by the fountains there or to feed the pigeons. Nelson’s Column is a tall column nearly 185 feet( 44m) high with a statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
Teacher: Now we are coming to Piccadilly Circus.
Pupil 2: It is the meeting point of six streets. It is famous for its brightly lit neon advertisements at night.
Teacher: We’ve just passed Piccadilly Circus and now we are making our way to Buckingham Palace. Look right. We’re passing Hyde Park.
Pupil 3. Hyde Park has got a lake in the middle called the Serpentine and you can take a boat out on the water. It is a good place to get away from the crowds and the noise of the city. You can listen to the speakers at Speaker’s Corner near the Marble Arch. People from all over the world come and speak here. You can ask a speaker some difficult questions if you like. Or you can stand on a box and speak to some of the listeners.
Teacher: Now we are at Buckingham Palace.
Pupil 4: It is the London home of the Queen .When the flag is flying on the top she is at home. Tourists come from all over the world to watch the changing of the Guard. Every day a new guard of thirty guardsmen marches to the Palace and takes the place of the old guard at 11.30 a.m.
Teacher: We have just turned left and you can see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
Pupil 5: The Houses of Parliament is the seat of British government. It stands on the left bank of the river Thames and is 984ft( 280m) in length. There is only one building there but it is called the Houses because it is divided into two Chambers- the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
Pupil 6: Big Ben is the name of the huge clock on the Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament. The Clock is 313 ft high and 41 ft square.
Teacher: Now we’re crossing Tower Bridge over the river Thames . From here you can see the Tower of London.
Pupil 7: The Tower of London is one of the oldest building in London . It was built more than nine hundreds years ago to guard the bridge that led into the city. Many kings lived there until the 17th century , when it became a prison . Now it is a museum.
Teacher: It’s a pity but our tour has finished. It’s impossible to describe all places of interest . The best way to know London is to visit it.
