CHRISTMAS

Christmas is a religious holiday. It is the day on which Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The Christmas story comes from the Bible. It tells a beautiful story of shepherds who were watching their sheep when an angel appeared to them..He told that a Savior had been born in Bethlehem. The shepherds went there to see the baby Jesus, who was born in a stable. His mother was the Virgin Mary and his father was Joseph.

European countries celebrate this holiday on December, 25. It is a happy holiday. Families come together to share their happiness, attend church, and exchange gifts. In the days before Christmas schools, offices, factories and clubs organize parties, homes and shops are crowded with people.

Cities and towns sparkle with bright lights and decorations. Families prepare for this holiday weeks before. They make special food. They make and buy gifts. Houses are decorated with wreaths of holly, evergreens, and mistletoe. Many families share memories by following special ethnic Christmas traditions from their country of origin.

Christmas cards are sent to friends and relatives. Children hang up Christmas stocking to receive gift from Santa Claus. Schools usually have two weeks of vacation, and some families take vacations together.

People wish each other a «Merry Christmas» during this holiday season. Christmas carols are sung on the radio and in public places during this season. Some of the most famous carols are «Silent Night», «Joy to the World» and «Jingle Bells». There are many shows on televisions called «Christmas Specials». Churches, organizations and newspapers ask for donations of money and food for the needy. Hot meals are prepared and served to the poor and homeless. Toys and games are given to children at Christmas parties by somebody dressed as Santa Claus.

It is important to mention that Christmas starts very early in Britain. You can buy Christmas cards in the shops in September and Christmas decorations go up around the end of October. On Christmas Eve offices and public buildings close at one o'clock, but the shops stay open late.

Mothers are usually busy on this day. They are in the kitchen and get the things ready for the next day's dinner. They prepare and stuff the Christmas turkey, prepare puddings, cakes and other tasty things.

On Christmas Day children wake up and run to open their stockings. They find there gifts. Children are told that it is Father Christmas (Santa Claus) who came down the chimney and brought the presents.

Many families go to the Church, after that they gather round the Christmas table and have their traditional holiday meal.

Christmas is usually a family holiday but in some homes friends may be also invited.

Різдвяні листівки відсилаються друзям і родичам. Діти розвішують різдвяні панчохи, щоб одержати подарунки від Санта-Клауса. У школах звичайно 2 тижні канікул, і родини проводять канікули разом.

У цей час люди бажають один одному веселого Різдва. По радіо й у громадських місцях співають різдвяні пісеньки. Найбільш популярні — це «Тиха ніч», «Веселощі світу» і «Дзвеніть, дзвіночки». Телебачення проводить багато різдвяних шоу. Церкви, організації та газети приймають пожертвування грошей і їжі для нужденних. Для бідних і бездомних готують гарячі обіди.
