LONDON — THE CAPITAL OF GREAT BRITAIN

As we know London is the capital of Great Britain. It is situated on the river Thames. It is an ancient city. It appeared at the place where the Roman invaders decided to build a bridge over the Thames. Today London is an important port and a trading centre. It is quite clear that London is an industrial and cultural centre of Great Britain. It has the population of more than 8 million people.

People say that London is the city of contrasts. Because there the past meets the present, the old meets the new.

There are four parts in London: West End, East End, the City and Westminster. West End is the richest part, East End is the part where working people live, the City is the financial centre. The City is small, but it is an important commercial centre of the country. The Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral are situated in the City. Here we can find the Fleet Street, where newspapers and news agencies have their officies.

Trafalgar Square is known as the centre of London. There is the Nelson Column in its centre. The Houses of Parliament are situated there too. At one side of it we can see the famous Big Ben, the Thames is behind it with the Westminster Bridge. The Westminster Abbey is noted for its architecture. Kings and queens have been crowned there and many famous people were buried there. Tourists come to see its beauty and have a look at the memorials to Shakespeare, Milton, Burns, Byron.

As mentioned above London is a port city, its waterways play an important role for the country.

Every year many visitors come to London, because there are places worth seeing. Historic buildings, museums, parks, galleries, streets are really attractive.

Як ми знаємо, Лондон — це столиця Великобританії. Він розташований на ріці Темза. Це давнє місто. Воно з’явилося на місці, де римські загарбники вирішили побудувати міст через Темзу. Сьогодні Лондон — важливий порт і торговий центр. Цілком очевидно, що Лондон — це індустріальний і культурний центр Великобританії. Його населення — більше 8 мільйонів чоловік.

Люди говорять, що Лондон — це місто контрастів. Оскільки там минуле зустрічається із сьогоденням, старе — з новим.

Лондон складається з чотирьох частин: Вест-Енд, Іст-Енд, Сіті та Вестмінстер. Вест-Енд — це найбагатший район, Іст-Енд — це частина міста, де живуть робітники, Сіті — це фінансовий центр. Сіті — дуже маленький район, але це важливий комерційний центр країни. Лондонський Тауер, собор святого Павла розташовані в Сіті. Тут можна знайти Фліт-стріт, де знаходяться офіси газет й інформаційних агентств.

Площа Трафальгар відома як центр Лондона. У її центрі розташовується колона Нельсона. Будинки парламенту теж знаходяться там. З одного боку ми можемо побачити знаменитий Біг-Бен, за спорудами Парламенту — Темзу і Вестмінстерський міст. Вестмінстерське абатство чудове за своєю архітектурою. Там коронували королів і королев, і багато знаменитих людей поховано там. Туристи приїжджають, щоб подивитися на красу абатства та глянути на пам’ятники Шекспіру, Мілтону, Бернсу, Байрону.

Як було згадано вище, Лондон — це портове місто, його водні шляхи відіграють важливу роль для країни.

Щороку багато відвідувачів приїжджає в Лондон, тому що там є місця, на які варто подивитися. Історичні будинки, музеї, парки, галереї, вулиці дійсно привабливі.
