Topic: Hobbies in my life.
Aims: By the end of the lesson learners will be able to:
English level: Pre-Intermediate
The lesson introduces learners to one of the most interesting topics for them - hobbies. They will revise key words of the topic and enlarge their vocabulary with new structures.
The lesson is suitable for teenagers and should be around 40 minutes long.
Materials: A teacher needs hand-outs and sheets of paper for students. Also a teacher will write some information on the blackboard.
Procedure
I. Pyramid discussion
A teacher gives students sheets of paper where some kinds of hobbies are written. There are 6 or 7 of them. At first students should choose some most popular occupations individually. Then they will discuss them in pairs and finally in the whole group of four.
Gardening
Reading
Dancing
Playing football
Riding a bike
Playing the piano
S1: Our group thinks that football and dancing are the most popular hobbies.
II. Mingle activity
A teacher draws a woman on the blackboard. This woman is sitting on the sofa and reading a book.
T: What am I drawing?
T: Yes, it is me. I am reading a book because I am fond of reading. I am interested in different genres of books.
A teacher writes questions on the blackboard: What are you fond of?
What are you interested in?
Students should ask each other about their hobbies using these questions. They draw answers on the sheets of paper and write a name of the person there. In some minutes a teacher can ask some of them what results they have got.
T: Kate, what is Helen fond of?
S1: She is fond of singing.
T: What is Paul interested in?
S2: He is interested in writing stories.
