Dear Kate,

Thank you for your letter. It was interesting to know about your school and your uniform. I’d like to tell you about my school. You know the school year in English schools begins on the first of September if the first of September is not Monday. The school year has three terms. Between the terms the pupils have holydays. I think you know that children in Great Britain begin to go to school when they are five. English schools have names not numbers as in your country. I go to Redwood School. It’s not big. Pupils from 5 to 11 years old go to our school. We have 12 classrooms. My classroom is very comfortable and always clean. The pupils sit in rows and follow a regular timetable. We have lessons five days a week. We never have lessons on Saturday and Sundays. The lessons are usually over at four o’clock. Our subjects are: Maths, English, History, Nature Study, Geography, Art, Music.  At the end of each term we get a school report. The school report usually contains names of the subjects, the place in the form, teacher’s notes and times absent and late. And do you have a school report? We spend a lot of time outdoors. We visit different museums and other famous and interesting places. Do the pupils of your school spend a lot of time outdoors?

And the breakfast is very easy to cook: a cup of cereal with milk, some fruit, a glass of orange juice and a toast-this is all.

No time at all. Practically nobody cooks traditional hot breakfast with gam and eggs and pancakes. Parents go to work and kids go to school getting a brown paper bag with a sandwich, potato chips, some baby carrots, and a can of Coke or Pepsi. Hey will have those for lunch at school. Their parents will also have a sandwich at the nearest fast food restaurant – that will be their lunch. Both the first and the second may have some snack later in the day like a candy or some cookies. Not all American families now have dinner together. But even if they do, some of them prefer to go to a nearest restaurant and just eat there having no trouble cooking or washing up. Many Americans eat what they call “TV dinners”. Those are special plastic containers with pre-cooked and frozen food. You don’t have to do anything – just off the cover and heat the container in the microwave oven and then enjoy your food watching TV. This is why they are called “TV dinners”.
