Dear Kate,
Thank you for your letter. It was interesting to know about your school and your uniform. I’d like to tell you about my school. You know the school year in English schools begins on the first of September if the first of September is not Monday. The school year has three terms. Between the terms the pupils have holydays. I think you know that children in Great Britain begin to go to school when they are five. English schools have names not numbers as in your country. I go to Redwood School. It’s not big. Pupils from 5 to 11 years old go to our school. We have 12 classrooms. My classroom is very comfortable and always clean. The pupils sit in rows and follow a regular timetable. We have lessons five days a week. We never have lessons on Saturday and Sundays. The lessons are usually over at four o’clock. Our subjects are: Maths, English, History, Nature Study, Geography, Art, Music. At the end of each term we get a school report. The school report usually contains names of the subjects, the place in the form, teacher’s notes and times absent and late. And do you have a school report? We spend a lot of time outdoors. You all know that the hot dog is one of the most popular foods in the world. It looks very simple-just a sausage put between the two parts of a long bun. It is a very tasty and fast snack. It first appeared in Germany where sausages are national food. People wanted to be able to have a sausage on a piece of bread, and so the hot dogs came to life. At first they were not called ‘’hot dogs’’. They had a German name after a dog with a very long body and very short legs. An American once drew a cartoon about those sausages for a newspaper. The Coffee Story.
Kaldi was tired, but he couldn’t sleep. His goats were active and very noisy. “Why can’t they sleep?” Kaldi thought. He couldn’t understand the problem so he watched the animals carefully . They were eating some green plants with little red fruit on them. The shepherd wanted to taste the fruit. He ate the soft part of each fruit and the hard things in the centre. After a minute he began to feel energetic. He was not tired any more and didn’t want to sleep. Those hard things were coffee, and Kaldi discovered them in Ethiopia more than 1.000 years ago. At least, that’s the traditional story. Rerhaps, it is true, perhaps, not. Nobody knows. But we know that coffee grew first in Ethiopia, and we know that somebody discovered it there more than 1.000 years ago. After that, Arab travellers took coffee
plants to Egypt and other Arab countries . Arab farmers began to grow coffee plants . People learnt to make a drink from the beans, they called it “qahwa”.

In my family my mother does most of shopping because she knows better what we need. My father and I usually help her to carry heavy bags from the supermarket. We usually buy fresh vegetables at our local market.

In the dairy section my mother always buys milk, butter, cheese , cream and eggs. A confectionary store always sells sweets, chocolates and cakes.
