Christmas Day The Christmas table looks much like a Thanksgiving feast of turkey and ham, potatoes and pie. No Christmas is complete without lots of desserts, like other Christmas customs, which were started long ago in other part of the world. Guests bring English fruit cake or plum pudding as presents to their hosts. At Christmas gatherings, adults drink eggnog, a drink made of cream, milk, sugar, beaten eggs and brandy or rum. Doughnuts Over the years some foreign dishes changed a little. Doughnuts were originally from Holland. In 1847 a young American boy told his mother that her doughnuts were never cooked in the middle. He cut out centre and his mother cooked them — and they were very tasty!

Maybe the US is most famous for “fast foods”. The first fast food restaurants served hamburgers, but now they serve other kinds of food too. Inside there is often a “salad bar”, where you can help yourself to as much salad as you want. Americans eat a lot, and when they go to a restaurant, they don't expect to be hungry afterwards. Most restaurants will put a lot of food on you plate – sometimes it can be too much. But if you can't finish it all, don't worry: they will give you a “doggy bag” and you can take it home. Most Americans now have a light breakfast instead of the traditional eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee. But on weekends there is more time, and a large late breakfast or early lunch is often eaten with family or friends.

The Hot Dog In its home country of Germany, the hot dog was called the frankfurter. It was named after Frankfurt, a German city. Frankfurters were first sold in the United States in the 1860s. Americans called frankfurters “dachshund sausages”. A dachshund is a dog from Germany with a very long body and short legs. “Dachshund sausage” seemed like a good name for the frankfurter. Dachshund sausage first became popular in New York, especially at baseball games. At games they were sold by men who kept them warm in hot-water tanks. As the men walked up and down the rows of people, they yelled, “Get your dachshund sausages! Get your hot dachshund sausages!” People got the sausages on buns, a special bread.

One day in 1906 a newspaper cartoonist named Tad Dorgan went to a baseball game. When he saw the men with the dachshund sausages, he got an idea for a cartoon. The next day at the newspaper office he drew a bun with a dachshund inside – not a dachshund sausage, but a dachshund. Dorgan didn’t know how to spell dachshund. Under the cartoon, he wrote “Get your hot dogs!” The cartoon was a sensation, and so was the new name.

McDonald's The first McDonald's was opened in San Bernardino, California, in 1949. Hamburgers were the main item on its menu. People liked the restaurant's fast-service. McDonald’s was a part of nearly every community in the United States. There were also other fast-food restaurants that sold hamburgers. McDonald's alone sold millions of hamburgers a year. Today of course there are McDonald's restaurants around the world. The food they serve is considered typically American. And, although McDonald's has expanded its menu, the main item on that menu is – as always – the hamburger.

Hamburger Fast food consisting of a fried patty of minced meat, usually served in a bread roll. About 4 million hamburgers are eaten each week worldwide. The world's largest hamburger chain is McDonald's. The hamburger (without the bun) is said to have been invented by medieval Tatar invaders of the Baltic area around Hamburg, Germany, from where it takes its name. As a dish made from minced meat, onions, bread, and milk, it was taken to the USA in the 19th century. The hamburger in its present form spread from there and was reintroduced to Europe in the 1960s.

Coca-Cola The Coca-Cola story begins in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1886. John S. Pemberton invents a new drink. Two of the ingredients are the South American coca leaf and the African cola nut. Pemberton can't think of a good name for the drink. Finally, Dr. Pemberton's partner Frank M. Robinson suggests the name Coca-Cola and writes the new name in a special way – and that becomes the famous trademark. Thirty years later the famous Coca-Cola bottle design first appears. The style of the bottle and the trademark are very important for the success of the drink.

For many years, they make only Coca-Cola. They only introduce new drinks – Fanta, Sprite and TAB – in the 1960s, and diet Coke in 1982. The recipe of Coco-Cola is a secret. In 1985 the company does something almost incredible. They change the recipe! But the public is very unhappy. And, soon after, they bring back the original recipe: “Coca-Cola Classic”. Today they sell Coca-Cola in 195 countries. Hundreds of millions of people, from Boston to Beijing, drink it every day. It has the most famous trademark in the world.

Popcorn All corn does not pop. A seed or kernel of corn must have 14 per cent water in it to pop. Other kinds of corn have less water and do not pop. When you put a kernel of corn on a fire, the water inside makes the corn explode. This makes a “pop” noise. That is why it is called popcorn. The American Indians popped corn a long time ago. The Indians knew there were three kinds of corn. There was sweet corn for eating, corn for animals, and corn for popping. The Indians introduced corn to the first settlers, or Pilgrims, when they came to America in 1620. One year after they came, the Pilgrims had a Thanksgiving dinner. They invited the Indians. The Indians brought food with them. One Indian brought popcorn!

Since that time Americans continued to pop corn at home. But in 1945 there was a new machine that changed the history of popcorn. This electric machine popped corn outside the home. Soon movie theatres started to sell popcorn to make more money. Popcorn at the movies became more and more popular. Today, Americans still continue the custom of eating popcorn at the movies. Americans use 5,000,000 pounds of popcorn every year. Many people like to put salt and melted butter on their popcorn. Some people eat it without salt or butter. Either way –Americans love popcorn!

Peanut butter Americans love to eat peanut butter. But what is peanut butter? It is a thick, creamy paste. You buy it in a jar at the grocery store. Manufacturers roast peanuts and take off the skin. Then they grind them into a thick paste – that's peanut butter! The peanut is not really a nut, but a pea. It is a strange pea because it grows underground. But peanut plants also have green vines with yellow flowers. These vines or stems grow above the ground. Peanuts are very healthy for you. They have more protein than a steak and they have many vitamins. The peanut comes from South America, but peanut butter is a food that is truly “American”. Peanut butter started in 1890 in St Louis. A doctor made some peanut butter. He gave it to patients who could not eat regular food. Later, peanut butter was popular as a health food.

Peanut butter is very popular with children in the United States. Perhaps their favourite way to eat it is a sandwich. Many children add jelly to their peanut butter sandwiches. This makes a favourite snack or lunchtime meal.
