No other name is more synonymous with the title “The voice of Scotland” than that of the poet Robert Burns. A farmer and a farmer’s son, Burns was born at Alloway, Scotland. He was the eldest of the seven children of William Burns , and spent his early years in the two-room cottage his father had built . He was 7 years old, when his father sold the house and began to work on the farm. Here Burns grew up in poverty and hardship.

Reading and writing, arithmetic, English grammar, history, literature and a slight acquaintance of Latin and French — that was Robert Burns' education. Besides, Robert listened to a lot of folk songs and folk tales from his mother in his childhood .

Robert Burns became a farmer too. At thirteen he was out in the fields all day helping his father, at fifteen he did most of the work on the farm. At 25 after his father’s death he became the head of the  family. He studied nature closely, and following the plough, he whistled and sang songs. In his songs he spoke of what he saw, of the woods, and the fields of the valleys, and the deer, of the hare, and the skylark, of the small field mouse, of the farmer's poor cottage home and the farmer lad's love for his lass.

In 1786 Burns published 600 copies of a small volume of his verses in the Scottish dialect. He became famous. As a result of this success, his friends advised him to go to Edinburgh. . Now Burns had the opportunity to see more of his native land and he made several tours.

In 1788 Robert Burns married Jean Armour , his Bonnie Jean whom he first met in 1784.  Jean had a beautiful voice. She sang his songs with great pleasure. Robert Burns composed songs for her.  In 1794 Robert Burns‘ family consisted of four boys and one girl. The fifth son was born on the day of his burial in 1796.

The last years of Burns' life were very hard. He gave up farming and with the help of his friends got a place at an office in Dumfries. Robert Burns’s Mausoleum , Dumfries Burns’s house in Dumfries On the 21st of July, 1796, being 37 years old, Burns died.

Burns is a democratic poet. His sympathy was with the poor. That is why his funeral was attended by a crowd of ten thousand. They were the common Scottish people whom he had loved and for whom he had written his poems and songs.

Burns' friends took care of his family. His sons got education. Jean died at the age of 80 and was always proud of her well-educated sons. But the name of Robert Burns is still alive. For Scotsmen Robert Burns is a symbol of national pride. Every year on January 25 (on his birthday) Burns Night is celebrated not only in Scotland but throughout Britain and Scottish-speaking world.

Robert Burns  (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796) was a poet and pioneer of the Romantic movement . He transformed a dialect of Scottish peasantry into high poetry. His language was the language of the heart. Burns is a democratic poet. His sympathy was with the poor people. A poet for all seasons, Burns speaks to all, soul to soul. Millions of people all over the world highly esteem and love Burns' poems.    Burns sang and described the common joys, sorrows, and life of common people. In his poems he sang their pride and dignity. He declared that every man must be treated as a man, have the freedom of a man. We see it in his poem “ A Man’s A Man For A ’That”.           Is there, for honest poverty;         That hangs his head, and a‘ that:         The coward- slave, we pass him by,         We dare be poor for a’ that!         For a’ that and a’ that,         Our toil’s obscure, and all that;         The rank is but the guinea-stamp. The Man’s the gold for a’ that!

Burns was a remarkable lyrical poet. His lyrical poems are known for their beauty, freshness, depth of feelings and their lovely melody. Among his best lyrics is “A Red, Red Rose”.

Robert Burns’ poetry was inspired by his deep love for his motherland, for its history and folklore. His beautiful poem  “My Heart’s in the Highlands ” is a hymn to the beauty of Scotland’s nature and to its glorious past.

Many of Burns’ poems have been put to music and are sung by all English-speaking people. One of them is Auld Lang Syne , a beautiful song of brotherhood and friendship. ’For auld lang syne’ means ‘in memory of past times’. At midnight on 31st December throughout Great Britain people celebrate the coming of the New Year, by holding hands in a large circle and singing this song:          Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And days of auld lang syne! For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet For auld lang syne.
