Ivan Yakovych Franko was a Ukrainian writer, poet, social and literary critic, journalist, interpreter, economist, political activist, doctor of philosophy, ethnographer, the author of the first detective novels and modern poetry in the Ukrainian language.

Ivan Franko was born on August 27, 1856 in the village Naguevichi (now Drogobych district, Lviv region) in a family in rural blacksmith. He grew up an orphan (in 1865 his father died – Ivan was nine years old, his mother died in 1872).

Despite the physical hardships of the family, Ivan studied: in 1862 – 64 years – at a school in the neighboring village Yasenytsya-Sil'na, in 1864 – in 1867 – at an elementary school in Drogobych, 1867 – 1875 – at the school in the same Drogobych.

Back in high school, I. Franko showed phenomenal abilities: he could almost literally repeat to his comrades an hour-long lecture by a teacher, knew by heart the whole "Kobzar", often did his homework in Polish in poetic form; in high school - became the best student; and had to earn a living (gave paid lessons in mathematics, foreign, history); collected a considerable library - almost 500 books; wrote the first poem (at the age of 15).

After finishing gymnasium in the town of Drogobych Ivan Franko continued his education in Lviv and later in Chernivtsi. In 1891 he graduated from the department of Philology of Chernivtsi University. The National University in Lviv was named after Ivan Franko.

In 1886, during a short trip to Kyiv, I. Franko married Olga Khorunzhynska. He dedicated a collection of poems "From the heights and lowlands" to her. They had 4 children : 3 sons and one daughter- Andrii,Taras,Petro and Hanna.

The intensive self-education was facilitated by the library collected by him, which had about 500 books in both Ukrainian and other European languages.

During his more than 40 years of creative activity, Franco worked fruitfully as an original writer (poet, novelist, playwright) and art critic, ethnologist and folklorist. His creative work, written in Ukrainian, German, Polish,Bulgarian, is estimated to number several thousand works with a total volume of more than 100 volumes. Only a part of the great Ukrainian writer's legacy has been published in 50 volumes, which is only half of I. Ya. Franko's creative work.

Franko’s prose works include nearly 100 short stories and a lot of novels. Among his plays the most popular are «Stolen Happiness» and «The Dreams of Prince Sviatoslav». In these plays Franko proved himself as a master of historical play and comedy.

From June 1877 to March 1878, the writer was imprisoned on charges of involvement in a secret union. After his release from prison a difficult time become for Ivan Franko. He was expelled from the university. In spite of it he continued his literary work – wrote verses, stories, translated a lot. At that time he wrote the well-known poem "Stonemasons". For this work of Franko people named him "our Stonemason".

Special mention must be made of Franko's work as a translator, which he carried on throughout his life. He translated masterpieces from 14 languages by famous authors including Homer, Dante, W. Shakespeare, J. Goethe, E. Zola, O. Pushkin and etc.

On the 28th of May (1916) Franko died in Lviv. He was burried at the Lychakivsky Cemetery. His death was a great loss for Ukrainian literature Ivan Franko is the favourite author of millions of Ukrainians, a real people’s poet.
