Plural nouns

To make a singular noun plural, add –s:a sister-sistersa dog-dogs

. If the word ends in: -ch, -sh, -x, z, or –s(-ss), add –es: a match –matchesa brush-brushesa box-boxes

NOTE the exceptions: Chech – Chechsepoch – epochsstomach - stomachs

If the word ends in - y, and there is a consonant before it, change – y to – i and add- es: a fly-fliesa baby-babies

If the word ends in - f / - fe, change - f / - fe to - ve and add-s: a leaf-leaves

But to some words ending in - f we just add - s:roof – roofs chief - chiefssafe – safes belief –beliefs proof - proofs

The plural of a noun ending in o is usually formed by adding s if the o follows a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) and es if the o follows a consonant. Examples: radio + s = radios (o follows a vowel)tomato + es = tomatoes (o follows a consonant)Nouns relating to music may form the plural by adding s even if o follows a consonant. Example: piano + s = pianos (o follows a consonant and noun relates to music)

Some nouns have irregular plurals: man - men woman – women foot – feet tooth - teeth goose – geese child - children ox - oxen person – people mouse – mice
