Definition of the water cycle. The cycle of processes that water circulates between the earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.

Evaporation and transpiration. Evaporation is when the sun heats up bodies of water and causes the water to turn into steam or vapor. A similar thing happens to plants when they are heated up by the suns rays. The water that the plant has collected with its roots flows through it and when heated up the plant sweats (transpires). The sun’s energy kind of gets the process going because without the sun we wouldn’t have the cycle at all.

Condensation. Condensation is when water vapor in the atmosphere cools and collects as droplets forming clouds and on the ground condensation also causes dew.

Precipitation. Precipitation happens when so much water has condensed that the air can no longer hold it and it returns to Earth as rain, sleet, snow, or hail.

Infiltration. Infiltration is when water from run-off and precipitation runs down and filter into the soil.

Snowmelt and Surface run-off. Snow melt is when snow has collected somewhere and has started to melt. The water from the snow melt sometimes collects into rivers. This is called run off. Run off occurs when the soil is infiltrated to the full capacity and the excess water from the rain and other forms of water can no longer be absorbed into the ground.

Aquifer. An aquifer is a body of underground water. Some of the water in an aquifer could be from infiltration.

Without the sun there would be no water cycle. The sun creates different temperatures for the different forms of water and that process is a never ending cycle.
