CLASS RULERS We raise our hands to speak. We work quietly at our seats. We use voices soft and sweet. We keep our places tidy and neat. We are helpful, friendly, and fair. We take turns and willingly share. We usually agree on the following rules for our class: Be nice. Do what you know is right.

GEOGRAPHY Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales. It’s an island. It’s situated in the west of Europe. It’s washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. There are a lot of rivers and lakes, valleys and forests, rocks and hills. Its landscape is very picturesque. The weather is usually wet and foggy. Great Britain has borders with France, Ireland and other European countries.

SYMBOLS The flag of Great Britain is red, white and blue. The British people call it “the Union Jack” The coat of arms of Great Britain has a crown on the shield, because it’s a monarchy. The shield is supported by the English lion and by the Unicorn of Scotland.

THE ROYAL FAMILY The queen of Great Britain is Elizabeth the Second. Her official residence is the Buckingham Palace. The palace was built in the 18th century. Her elder son is Charles. Charles also has two sons, William and Harry.

Young Queen She was crowned in 1953.

Her Magesty She is 84 today.

The main types of houses in England are: Detached (a house not joined to another house).

Semi-detached (two houses joined together). A semi-detached house is a house which is joined to another house on one side.

Traditions and Customs in Great Britain

New Year January 1st Traditionally Scottish celebration. At midnight everybody joins hands and sings Auld Lang Syne.

Saint Valentine’s Day February 14 Was started in the time of Roman Empire. Is dedicated to St. Valentine. People send a card to someone they love, like, fancy or admire.

Easter In April. The celebration of the Resurrection of Christ Schools are closed for two weeks. People give each other chocolate eggs that are wrapped in silver paper.

May Day May 1 A pagan festival to celebrate the end of winter and welcome summer. Children dance around the maypole and sing songs.

Halloween October 31 A pagan festival celebrates the return of the souls that visit their former houses. People dress up as witches, ghosts etc. Houses are decorated with pumpkins.

Christmas Day December 25 Religious ceremony commemorating the birth of Christ. Children wake up early to find presents in their stockings. Traditional Christmas tree and dinner.

Next tradition is love for animals. The English love their earnestly, almost every house hold pets. It seems that they love animals more than their own children, forgiving them such tricks, for which the children would be properly punished.

5 o'clock tea. On the table there is tea, milk or cream, sugar, bread and butter, cakes and jam. Friends and visitors are often present at tea.

British entertainments are also traditional. National sports are considered to be golf, cricket, and tennis, polo, fishing and hunting foxes. Cricket for England is more than a game. The British play it every Sunday. If you really want to win their trust, try to learn the rules of cricket.

It is a wonderful tradition to give a good education to children. Private boarding schools are very popular among wealthy people.
