MASNYTSIA OR PANCAKE DAY

The last week before spring is Pancake week or Masnytsya. It is one of the ancient Slavic holidays and symbolizes the ending of winter , the beginning of spring and awakening of nature. This week ancient people honoured Sun , that gave warmth and wealth.

That’s why people cooked bakery that symbolize the Sun - pancake. Ancient Slavic believed that if you eat pancake - you’ll eat a part of warmth and power of the Sun. People believe that it’s not a Masnytsya if you don’t eat a pancake!!!

This holiday week is divided into two periods - wide and narrow. Narrow Masnytsya is from Monday till Wednesday. And people are allowed to work. And other period - Wide Masnytsya is from. Thursday till Sunday. It is devoted to having rest, to celebrating,to skiing and having fun.

MONDAYMonday was called “Meeting”. People made ice slides and believed that if your slide was bigger and the laugh was louder - your harvestwould be better!

TUESDAYTuesday was called “Flirting”. People went outside to have fun. There were different competitions to find out one’s strength, skills and intelligence. Boys invited girls to ski and girls invited boys to treat pancakes.

WEDNESDAYWednesday was called “Yummy” . This day every host cooked a lot of delicious meals. And of course the main meal were pancakes.

THURSDAYThat day people began to have fun and to have rest from the evening till the morning. They sang songs, played games and relaxed.

FRIDAYThis day mothers-in-law were invited to their sons-in-law to be treated with pancakes. It was called “mother-in-law’s evening”

SATURDAYThis day daughter-in-law invited her husband’s relativesand treated them. She cooked meals and set the table to show her respect .

SUNDAYThis day was called “ forgiven Sunday”. People asked to forgive them their friends, relatives, nearest and dearest . After it people went to the dummy to burn it and asked spring to come.

PANCAKESThis week people tried to eat a lot of pancakes,because as many pancakes you ate, as many wealth would be. If pancakes were good, you would have a great harvest and wealth. If pancakes were bad, you would have only problems.

Weather Forecast on Pancake Day. If the weather was cold, the summer would be warm. If the weather was rainy, there would be lot of mushrooms in autumn.
