                     ANNE OF KYIV - QUEEN OF FRANCE

Anna was the youngest daughter of  Yaroslav the Wise, the Grand Prince of Kyiv. She was very beautiful and clever. In 1051 Henry I, the King of France asked Anne to marry him and in spring she travelled to France.

Anne was well-educated. She could read and write in five languages but her husband and many of his barons couldn’t. As a queen, Anne often signed official documents and she did it in her native language. In fact, her signature is the oldest example of old Ukrainian handwriting!

Anne called her first son Philip. When Henry I died Philip was only eight. He was very young and his mother often helped the young king to rule the country.

Anne died in 1075. All the French kings after Henry I were related to Anne of Kyiv.

Sightseeing Tour in London

London is the capital of the United Kingdom. More than 8 million people live there. The city is situated on the river Thames. London has a lot of places of interest.

Tower Bridge is a symbol of London. There are two towers in the bridge.

The Tower of London was once a palace, a fortress, a prison, and a zoo. Now it is a historical museum.

Westminster Palace is the seat of the British government. In one of the towers there is famous Big Ben, the largest clock of England.

Buckingham Palace is the official Royal residence. It is like a small town. When the Queen is at home we can see the flag above the palace.

Trafalgar Square is the main square of London with a monument to Admiral Nelson.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is the biggest English church. Another famous church is Westminster Abbey. It is a place where all kings and queens were crowned and royal weddings took place.

London Eye is the biggest wheel in Britain. It is 135 meters high. There is a wonderful view from it.

Madam Tussaud’s Museum is the most popular and talked about wax museum in the world. There are wax models of the famous people there.

London is also famous for its beautiful parks.  It is home to the world’s most famous tourist attractions.

Lesson

Topic: Around the World

Objectives: students will be able to work successfully in small groups and in pairs; practice topical vocabulary; improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills; revise the Past Simple and the Present Perfect Tenses; reveal creativity, develop imagination.

Equipment: audio tracks for listening, sheets of paper with the tasks for groups and pairs, a presentation.

Procedure

І. Підготовка до сприйняття іншомовного мовлення. Introductions.

  1.           Greeting.

Teacher: Good morning everybody! Dear students, sit down, please!

How are you?

Ok! I am glad to see all of you in good health and mood!

Tell me, please:

- Who is on duty today? Who is absent today?

- Now, look at the window and give a weather report. What is the weather like today?

- So, what season is coming?

- Yes, the spring is coming, but February is now. Tell me, please what date is it today?

Open your copybooks and write down the date.

Now, look at each other, please. Smile! Look at me. Smile!

Let’s start our lesson as usually – wish the pleasant words to your classmates.

Teacher: Today we have an unusual lesson. And we are going to work in two groups: Dreamers and Travelers. Choose the leaders of your groups. Let’s remember our classroom rules. (Читаємо з екрану).

Yes, old Ukrainian proverb says: “Study the past if you would divine the future”. And I want to start our trip from Ukraine. As you know, our lesson is not usual that’s why we will visit not only countries, but we will travel in time and the first station is “History of Ukraine”.

Pre-reading

Teacher:

  1.      Look at the picture above and answer the questions.

  •          Who are the people?
  •          Where are they?
  1.      Now, look at the next pictures and remember the names. Fill in the gaps with people’s names.

      

Reading:

Teacher: Look at the map of old Kyiv. Read the text about Yaroslav and Anna then match the paragraphs with the pictures on the right.

This is the monument to Anne of Kyiv, the Queen of France, which Ukraine gave to the city of Senlis as a gift. In 2013 the Ukrainian Cultural Centre of Queen Anne was opened in Senlis. (слайди)

Teacher: But not far from Senlis there is a city called Paris. It is the heart of France, its capital.

Pre-listening:

Teacher: What places of interest of Paris do you know?

 

Listening:

Teacher: Dear children let’s listen to the dialogue about Tony and Ann. They are in Paris on holiday. Look at the table, then listen and tick the activities that they have already done and put a cross next to those that they haven’t done yet.

Listen to once more. In pairs, ask and answer questions, as in the example.

SA: Have they visited the Eiffel Tower yet?

SB: Yes, they have already visited the Eiffel Tower. Have they been to Versailles yet?

SA: No, they haven’t been to Versailles yet.

Post-listening:

Teacher: Would you like to visit France? What sightings in Paris would you like to see?

Teacher: To what country can you travel from France under the water? (To Great Britain). How can we do it? (Through the English Channel).
