Banking system in the USA

The banking system in the USA includes the Federal Reserve System, the commercial. banks and the companies, as well as such specialized banking institutions as the investment banks, the savings banks and the Government- Owned export-import Bank. Numerous credit unions and finance companies are also the part of the banking system. The commercial banks in the United States are either state banks or national banks.

Those state banks which are not members of the Federal Reserve System are supervised by the state regulatory agencies. All the national banks are members of the System. They are supervised by the Controller of the Currency, an official of the Treasury Department and member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. His duty is to control the issue of federal reserve notes. No commercial banks is allowed to have branches beyond the limits of the state in which it was established. Bank branch outside the bank's home-office city are either limited or banned at all.

This restrictions have led to the formation of bank holding companies (group banking).
