Teacher: You are welcome to our party, dedicated to St. Valentine’s Day, which is always held on February 14th and brings us happiness and good luck. St. Valentine is one of the popular holidays in Europe and America. It is the day, when boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, husbands and wives, friends and neighbours, and even the office staff, exchange greetings of affection, undying love, or satirical comment.
Well, let’s start our party.
P1: Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day – and its patron saint – is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
P2: One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men – his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
P3: Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured. Saint Valentine was a good friend of children. He was a Christian. Even in prison Valentine showed his love for everyone.
P4: According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl – who may have been his jailor's daughter – who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.
T: There are many other legends about how Valentine’s Day started, and no one knows for sure whether any of them are true.

T: Now we’ll see how well you know Valentine symbols.
P5: A Valentine Card is a special greeting for Saint Valentine’s Day. But there are also the symbols of love and friendship. They are flowers, stars, sweets, and birds.
P6: One of the earliest popular symbols of the day was Cupid with his bow and arrow. It goes back to Roman times too. Cupid was the son of a beautiful Goddess Venus. Wherever Venus went Cupid went too. He was a merry little guy and liked to see people happy. Cupid went around shooting gold-tipped arrows into the hearts of humans. As soon as the arrow hit them they fell in love.
P7: Flowers are the symbols of beauty and love. So people give flowers on Valentine’s Day, to show their love and affection.
T: Whatever the odd mixture of origins, Saint Valentine’s Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day when you show your friend or lover how much you love and care about them. You can send candies or flowers to someone you think special. Most people send Valentine Card.
P8: There are many symbols on Valentine Cards. And each has its special meaning. A fan shows that you open your heart to a person you love. A ribbon shows that you want to be tied to another special person. A ring is a symbol of love and binding to another person. When a man gives a ring to a woman they are engaged. Lace shows that you want a special person to be caught in the net of your heart. A red mitten is a sign that you don’t like someone. So when a person gives you a red mitten he says “I don’t like you”. A coin shows you will marry a wealthy person. So if someone gives you a coin he/she is wishing you to be wealthy.
T: * What is to get a red mitten on Valentine’s Day? (It means that his/her girl/boy doesn’t like him/her.)
* What is Cupid with his bow and arrow? (It is a symbol of love.)
* What is lace on a Valentine’s Card? (It means you have caught my heart in a net.)
* What is the ribbon on a Valentine Card? (It means you are tied up, you are my girl.)
T: Now let’s repeat some expressions.
(The speaker draws the children’s attention to the poster)
I love you.
I’m crazy about you.
I don’t like you.
I don’t care about you.
I’m in your net.
T: Can you say anything about the magic, which was tried on Valentine’s Eve?
P9: One young lady pinned four bay leaves to the corners of her pillow and one in the middle. Then she dreamed of her sweetheart. She thought that meant she would be married to him soon.
P10: St. Valentine’s Day came to be celebrated in most of the countries of Europe. Sicily is an island south of Italy. There a young girl would stand at her window for half an hour before sunrise. If no one went by, she believed that year she would not marry. If she saw a man pass, she thought she would marry him or someone who looked like him.
P11: In Germany girls try another way of learning whom they would marry. They planted onions on St. Valentine’s Day. Each girl tagged several dry onions in a corner near the fireplace. She thought she would marry the man whose onion sprouted first.
T: We are beginning our grammar exercises! Each girl will get a special card written on Valentine’s Day. Your task is to read the card carefully and find any mistakes there. Time – 2 minutes.
Deer, Mary!
I hope that Falentine’s Dai shall bring you lots ov fun! I thinks you’re extra-specially nice. And so does everione!
Best wesh, John
T: Here you can see rather interesting verse. Put these lines in right order.
A Meeting
By H. Munroe
A flower is looking through the ground,
Blinking at the April weather,
Now the child has seen the flower,
Now they go and play together.
Now it seems the flower will speak,
And will call the child its brother –
But, oh strange forgetfulness? –
They don’t recognize each other.
T: Valentine’s Day is a day to share loving feelings with friends and the family. It is also known as a holiday honouring lovers. You have experienced love and friendship of schoolmates and teachers in this Valentine celebration. May your love and friendship grow and touch everyone you meet.
I congratulate you on St. Valentine’s Day and wish you true and faithful love (Вчитель дарує учням святкові листівки з відомими афоризмами).
Good luck to all of you.
