ST VALENTINE’S DAY ST1: : Dear guests! Dear boys & girls! Good evening! Nice to see you at our traditional St. Valentine’s party ST2: Love, love me do, You know I love you, I’ll always be true, So please, love me do. ST3: Someone to love, Somebody new, Someone to love, Someone like you. ST4: I hope that Valentine’s Day Will bring you lots of fun! He thinks you’re extra – specially nice, And so does everyone! ST5: You’re just the nicest kind of boy/girl So very grown up, too No wonder that this Valentine Brings lots of love for you. ST6: It’s here again, the day when boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, husbands and wives, friends and neighbors, and even the office stuff will exchange greetings of affection, undying love or satirical comment. ST7: St. Valentine’s Day, February 14, has been a customary day for choosing sweethearts and exchanging love . ST1: The method of choosing sweethearts on St. Valentine’s Day varied in different times and places. It could be a serious matter leading to marriage, or it could be a kind of game. Countless generations of young people have acknowledged St. Valentine as the friend and patron of lovers. ST2: What kind of holiday is St. Valentine’s Day? ST3: St. Valentine’s Day is a religious holiday, which is celebrated in Great Britain, in many European countries and in the USA. St. Valentine’s Day has roots in several legends... ST4: There are many legends about St. Valentine. Legends are stories that are handed down from the past. No one really knows the actual origin of Valentine’s Day. Let’s get acquainted with some versions of this holiday. ST5: Many historians seem to trace it to an ancient Roman festival called “Lupercalia”. This was held on February, 15 to honour Faunus the God of animal life, hunting, herding, the patron of husbandary, & the guardian of the secret love of nature. After Christianity spread, some think this pagan festival eventually become St. Valentine’s Day. ST4: One of the early symbols of love is Cupid, the Roman God of love, who is represented as a young boy with a bow and arrow ST4: Other experts contect Valentine’s Day with Two saints of the early Christian Church. According to one story, St. Valentine was a priest who would mary young couples against the orders of the Roman Emperor Claudius II, who believed that single young men made better soldiers. This story goes back to about A.D.200. CUPID: “ Valentine was a Christian priest in the Roman Empire 300 years after death of Jesus Christ”. ST7: My sweetheart, look! I can’t believe it. Is it St. Valentine himself? ST8: You’re welcome, patron of lovers. CUPID: “This is a legend of how St. Valentine’s Day began. When the Roman Emperor Claudius II needed soldiers, he made a law against marrying because he felt that marriage made men want to stay at home instead of fighting at wars. But at that time there was a kindly priest, named Valentine. He couldn’t agree with the emperor’s decision. When he saw that young couples were truly in love, he married them secretly”. THE DAUGHER: I’m so grateful to you. Even in prison you, Valentine, showed your love for everyone and restored my sight! THE PRIEST: Unfortunately, tomorrow on February 14 I will have to die. But I’m not scared and I want to tell everybody on earth, “I love you. I’m your Valentine”. CUPID: Just before his death, on February 14, he sent her a farewell message signed “from your Valentine”. THE DAUDHTER: I can’t believe my eyes. He died. But how shall I be able to live without him? It’s impossible. I must die with him. THE JAILER: My daughter! What shall I do without you? When did Christianity become the religion of Rome? This joyful day was changed to St. Valentine’s Day, in honour of the saint who had given his life to help lovers. ST1: There was also another St. Valentine who was a good friend to children. Because he would not worship the gods decreed the Roman emperor, he was put in prison. While he was imprisoned, the children missed him & thought him loving notes. He was supposedly executed on February 14 A.D. 270. Some people think this is why we exchange friendly & caring messages on this day. ST2: Other believe that the world “valentine” came from a Norman world “galantine” , which means “a gallant” or a “lover”. Some people connect the celebrating of Valentine’s Day with an old English belief that birds choose their on February 14. ST4: A Frenchman, Charles, of Orleans, was captured by the English in a battle. He was put in prison in the Tower of London. There he wrote valentine poems. Many of them were saved & can be seen today in the British museum ST3 The custom of sending valentine cards started in the middle ages. – Written valentines began about 1400. The oldest one we know was made in 1415. ST7: There are many other legends about how Valentine’s Day started, and no one knows for sure whether any of them are true. Also, there are a lot of traditions of celebrating St. Valentine’s Day in different countries. Oh, my sweetheart! Who is that wonderful young woman? ST: She is our guest from Italy. She will tell us about the celebrations “St. Valentine’s Day” in Italy. THE GIRL: In Italy girls tried a different way of learning whom they would merry. They planted onions on St. Valentine’s Day. Each girl tagged onions in a corner heart the place. She thought she would marry the man whose onion routed first. - In Italy a young girl would stand at her window for half an hour before sunrise. The first man to appear would be her husband! If no one went by, she would not be married that year! THE 2ND GIRL: In England in the 1700’s young ladies wrote men’s names on scraps or paper, rolled each in a ball & dropped them into water. The 1st paper to appear on the surface had the name or the lady’s true love. THE 3RD GIRL: - In Germany girls tried another way of learning whom they would many. They planted onions on St. Valentine’s Day. Each onion has the man’s name. She thought she would marry the man whole onion sprouted first. ST 6: - Another valentine tradition is a lovely tradition of singing songs of love. Such greetings were popular even in the Middle Ages. At that time few people could read or write. Lovers usually sang their valentines to their sweet hears. Now we’ll listen to lovely Valentines!
