Act I

Scene 1

(Cара і її тато ідуть по дорозі і зупиняються ніби перед будівлею)

Sara: Papa, papa!

Father: What is it,  darling?  What is Sara thinking of?

Sara: Is this place?

Father: Yes, little Sara, it is. We have reached it at last.

Sara: Couldn’t you go to that place with me, papa? Couldn’t you go to school too? I would help you with your lessons.

Father: But you won’t stay there for a very long time, little Sara. You will go to a nice house where there will be a lot of girls and you will play together, and I will send you books, and you will grow so fast.

Sara: Well, papa. If we are here, we must do it.

Scene 2

(Зустріч з власницею закритої приватної школи-інтернату.)

Miss Minchin: It will be a great privilege to have such a beautiful and promising child, Captain Crewe. A clever child is a great pleasure in a school like mine.

Father: I am not worried about her education. The difficulty will be to keep her from learning too fast and too much. She is always sitting with a book. She ought to play more  with dolls.

Sara: Papa, I can’t have many dolls. Dolls should  be intimate friends. Emily is going to be my intimate friend.

Miss Minchin: Who is Emilly?

Sara: She is a doll. Papa has bought it to me.

Miss Minchin: Mr. Crewe, it’s time to say goodbye.

Father:  Are you learning me by heart, little Sara?

Sara: No. I know you by heart. You are inside my heart.

(Тато і Сара обнімаються. Тато уходить в один бік, а міс Мінчін в інший. Сара залишається сама. Тихо лунає музика. Сара оглядає свою нову кімнату. Сідає в крісло зі своєю лялькою і відкриває книгу.)

Scene 3

(Дівчата сидять за партами. Іде урок французької мови. Ерменгард дуже погано читає текст і вчитель весь час її поправляє)

Ermengrade: (читає з помилками) Qui?  Qui est là? Qui est-ce? Qui est-ce qui vient avec nous?  Qui voyez-vous?   Qui est-ce que vous demandez?

French teacher: Mademoiselle Ermengrade, С'est mauvais. Faites plus d'exercice.

(Вчитель звертається до Сари. Дівчина представляється і на прохання вчителя зачитує те саме завдання відмінно, без помилок. Вчитель хвалить Сару.)

French teacher: Quel est votre nom ?

Sara: Je m'appelle Sara.

French teacher: Mademoiselle Sara, lisez ces questions.

Sara: Qui?  Qui est là? Qui est-ce? Qui est-ce qui vient avec nous?  Qui voyez-vous?   Qui est-ce que vous demandez?

French teacher:  Brillant!

(Лунає дзвоник. Сара підходить до Ерменгард)

Sara: What is your name?

Ermengarde: My name is Ermengarde St John.

Sara: Mine is Sara Crewe. Yours is very pretty. It sounds like a story-book.

Ermengarde: Do you like it?  I like yours. You can speak French, can’t you?

Sara:  Yes. I can speak it because I have heard it all my life. You could  speak  it if you can always hear it.

(Дівчата повільно йдуть зі сцени , ніби до кімнати Сари).

Ermengarde: Oh, no, I couldn’t. I never could speak it! I can’t say the words.

Sara: Would you like to see Emily?

Ermengarde: Who is Emily?

Sara: Come up to my room and see…

(Дівчата уходять).

Scene 4

(Дівчата-учениці сидять навколо  Сари, а вона розповідає їм казку. Бекі замітає підлогу)

Sara: The Mermaids swam about in the crystal-green water and dragged after  them a fishing-net with deep  sea pearls. The Princess sat  on the white rock  and watched them.

(У дівчини-служниці  Бекі падає щітка).

Girl 1: That girl has been listening.

Sara: I knew she was listening. Why shouldn’t she?  Who  is  that  little  girl?

Girl 2: Her name is Becky. Everyone calls her “Becky, do this” and “Becky, do that”.

(Дівчата встають і розходяться. Сара залишається і підходить до Бекі).

Sara: Don’t be frightened. You were tired.

Becky: Aren’t you angry?

Sara: No. Of course, I’m not. Why we are just the same – I am only a little girl like you. It’s just an accident  that I am not you, and you are not me!

Becky: Miss, I must go.

Sara: See you!

(Бекі уходить. Сара звертається до глядачів).

Sara: If   I was a   princess – a real princess, I could give people what they need…

(Сара уходить).

Scene 5

(День народження  Сари. Дівчата прикрашають зал квітами. Заходить Сара і всі її вітають).

All: Happy birthday! Many happy returns!

(Дівчата стають  навколо Сари і співають “Happy birthday!” Раптом лунає дзвінок у двері. Заходить джентльмен, містер Берроу. Він і міс Мінчін виходять вперед. Дівчата відходять назад, але продовжують веселитися.)

Miss Minchin: Please  be seated, Mr  Barrow.

Mr Barrow: Birthday presents to an eleven-year-old  child. Mad extravagance, I call  it.

Miss Minchin: Captain Crewe is a man of fortune. The diamond mines alone-…

Mr Barrow (вскакує): Diamond  mines!  There are none.

Miss Minchin: What! What do you mean?

Mr Barrow: Diamond mines bring ruins  oftener than they bring wealth. Captain Crewe is dead. He died of jungle fever and business troubles combined.

Miss Minchin: Do you mean to tell me that he left nothing? That Sara will have no fortune? That the child is a beggar? That she is left on my hands as a little pauper?

Mr Barrow: I have nothing to do with that, madam. Better keep  her and make use of her. She’s a clever child, I believe. You can get a good deal out of her as she grows older. (Берроу піднімається і прощається). Goodbye, Miss  Minchin.

Miss Minchin: Goodbye, Mr Barrow.

Act II

Scene 1

(Сара в старій сукні, трохи забруднена, прибирає в кімнаті, підмітає, витирає пил. Обережно заходить Ерменгард).

Ermengarde: Oh, how – how are you?

Sara: I don’t know.

Ermengarde: Sara, do you think you can bear living here?

Sara (оглядаючи кімнату):  If I pretend it’s quite different, I can. Or  if I pretend it is a place  in a story. Other   people have lived in worse places. I think of the people in the Bastille!

Ermengarde: Bastille?

Sara: Yes. That will be a good place to pretend about. I am a prisoner in the Bastille. Miss  Minchin is the jailer. And Becky is the prisoner in the next cell.

(Дівчата уходять).

Scene 2

(На сцені двоє чоловіків, одягнені як індійські слуги, прикрашають Сарину кімнату і накривають на стіл  і залишають книгу з запискою. Заходять Сара і Бекі. Вони здивовано оглядають кімнату, підбігають до кожної речі, роздивляються).

Sara: Oh, it isn’t true! It can’t be true! But oh, how true it seems.

Becky: It’s all real.

Sara (читає записку): “To the little girl in the attic. From a friend.”  The Magic has come and done it, Becky, while we were asleep.

(Дівчата веселяться. До них приходить Ерменгард і вони разом сідають за стіл, їдять, танцюють. Раптом до кімнати заходить Міс Мінчін).

Miss Minchin: What’s up? Becky, you ‘re an impudent creature! Go to your attic. You leave the house in the morning!

Ermengarde (плалучичи): Oh, don’t send her away. We’re only – having a party.

Miss Minchin: So I see. With the Princess Sara at the head of the table. It is your doing. I will  attend you  tomorrow. You shall  have neither  breakfast, dinner, nor supper!

Sara: I have not had either dinner or supper  today, Miss Minchin.

(До кімнати заходять індійський джентльмен, містер Карісфорд,  і англійський джентльмен, містер Кармічель).

Carrisford: Good evening, Miss! Let me introduce myself. I am Mr Carrisford, Captain Crewe’s friend. I have been looking for his daughter. I seem to have found her. Are you Sara, his daughter?

Sara: Yes, sir.

Carrisford: Come on with me,  Sara!  ( Бере Сару за руку).

 Miss Minchin: I am sorry to disturb you, Mr Carrisford but I have explanations to make. I am  Miss Minchin, the owner of the Young Ladies’  Seminary. It’s Sara home.

Carrisford: No,  her home for the future will be with me.

Miss Minchin: With you, sir ?! What does this mean?

Carrisford: Kindly explain the matter,  Carmichael.

Carmichael: Mr Carrisford was Captain Crewe’s partner in certain large investments. The fortune which Captain Crewe supposed he had lost is now in Mr Carrisford’s hands. Mr Carrisford has been searching for Sara for nearly two years: he has found her at last, and he will keep her.

Miss Minchin (іде до виходу, раптом обертається): I suppose that you feel now that you  are  a  princess  again.

(Містер Карісфорд обнімає Сару, містер Кармічель бере за руку Бекі. Вони допомагають дівчатам одягнути пальто і разом уходять. Всі щасливі і посміхаються. Ерменгард маше їм на прощання.)
