Paraska: Daddy, please let me come with you! I’m already eighteen! I have never been to the fair. I want to see everything with my own eyes! Solopii: My dear, I don't mind you coming with me. But your mother… Paraska: She isn’t my mother! She is my stepmother!
Solopii: Thccc! She may hear us! You will get me into trouble!
Paraska: Daddy, please!!!! My friends Hrystia and Oksana are going to the fair! And I will!
Hivria: What are you talking about? I’m coming from our neighbors. And I’m so peaceful now. But what can I hear? A quarrel?
Paraska: Mother! After visiting our neighbors you are always so kind! Let me see the fair in Sorochyntsi! It’s my biggest wish!
Hivria: Promise to behave yourself!
Paraska: I promise, mother!
Hivria: And not to talk to young fellas!
Paraska: Of course not!
Hivria: Solopii, let our daughter see Sorochyntsi.
Solopii: Yes, my wife, as you want.
Storyteller: The long way to Sorochintsi was very beautiful. Ukrainian step is endless and marvelous! Even Hivria’s mean heart admired the beauty of the landscape. Solopii rode the horse in a silence. Paraska tried to catch all the houses, mills and flowers with her eyes, because everything was so exciting for her. Suddenly they’ve heard the voice…
Hrytsko: What a beautiful girl! I would give everything I have to kiss her.
Hivria: What did you say, beast? Maybe you would like to kiss my broom!!!
Hrytsko: Oh! Look at this old witch! She is a real devil!
Boy 1: Yes, she is! She has got horns!
Boy 2: Maybe, she’s got hooves too!
Hivria: Let you chock, dirty beggar! Let your father slip on the ice! Let your heads be beaten with a pot! Go to hell!!!!
Hrytsko: Can you see? She knows a lot of bad words! I tell you! This old witch doesn’t even have a tongue ache!
Hivria: Old?!!! I’m young and beautiful! And you!!!!! I don’t know your mother but she is a rubbish! And your father is a rubbish! And you too!…
Boy 1: Easy, Hrytsko! Let her go!
Boy 2: Come on! She’s just a stupid woman.
Hivria: He is a criminal! Let me beat him!
Solopii: Enough, my wife, enough!
Hivria: Don’t hold me, you’re stupid man!
Paraska: Mummy, let him go…
Hivria: I’ll send you home, foolish girl!
Paraska: Oh! No! Please, don’t! They’re uncle and aunt Tsybulia! What a pleasant meeting!
Hivria: Oh, my dear sister! Nice to meet you! You can’t even imagine what happened to me!
Motria: Good afternoon, dear Hivria. Tell me everything!
Solopii: Brother, glad to see you! How’s your business?
Tsybulia: Welcome to our hut, brother! Let’s have rest and eat a bit!
Storyteller: Sorochyntsi Fair is an amazing place! The long rows with goods for any taste! Clothes, jewelries, furniture, carpets are of different colours and qualities! The food of marvelous tastes and flavors! Grains and domestic animals! And, of course, entertainments! The soul sings here!
Boy 1: Bulls! Young and strong! Come and buy!
Boy 2: Good bulls for your farm!
Hrytsko: Twenty five for bulls!
Gipsy: Sell me your bulls for twenty!
Hrytsko: No! My bulls worth their money!
Gipsy: Than let me read your hand!
Hrytsko: I don’t believe in this!
Gipsy: Believe or not, but I can see a nice girl behind you! She is very beautiful!
Boy 1: She tells this for everybody!
Boy 2: It’s not true!
Gipsy: Your hand doesn’t lie! Troubles are going to come! Be careful,
Hrytsko. Грицько відмахується) Seller1: Wheat! Wheat! The best price! Wheat!
Solopii: How much is the wheat?
Seller1: Come here, good man! We’ll discuss everything! I can suggest you everything you want!
Seller 2: Necklaces! Beads! Ribbons! Oh! Beauties! Look at my goods!
You will like it!
Hrystia: What a necklace! Just look!
Oksana: It fits you so much! Let’s take it!
Paraska: I like this beads. But my mother-in-law won’t let me buy them.
Hrystia: She envies your beauty! She is old and you are young! She gets jealous!
Oksana: Try this wreath! You are like a bride! And there are a lot of candidates here!
Paraska: Don’t confuse me! I can only dream about true love.
Gipsy: You will have your love! Believe me!
Paraska: How can you know?
Gipsy: I can see it! Give me your hand! Your line of love is long and clear! Look! Here is your boyfriend. He is strong, handsome and clever! And he is very close…
Seller 3: Cakes! Pies! Buns! Rolls!
Hrystia: Girls! I’m hungry! Let’s buy some rolls!
Oksana: I want a pie!
Hrytsko: Don’t be afraid of me, my heart! I won’t tell you anything wrong.
Paraska: Maybe, you won’t tell anything wrong… But I have a strange feeling.
Storyteller: When it’s hot, the best place to have rest at the fair is a pub. Everybody can have something to eat or drink here. But the most interesting thing is gossiping...
Farmer 1: You will see, no sack of wheat will be sold!
Solopii: Oh God! Why do you think so?
Farmer 1: Because if evil spirit appears somewhere, wait for disaster!
Solopii: Evil spirit?
Farmer 2: Yes, this land is cursed. And we won’t sell any wheat here.
Solopii: No way!
Farmer 2: Can you see that old hut? The demon lives there! Yesterday one man was walking past it and suddenly saw ... the pig muzzle! It oinked with terrible sound! The man was frightened very much!
Gipsy: They say it might appear the Devil himself!
Solopii: What’s the Devil? (оглядається і бачить Параску з Грицьком) Hey, mate! I see you are good at hugging!!!
Hrytsko: You must don’t remember me, good man. But I know you!
Solopii: I don’t have to remember all the dirty faces I ever saw!
Hrytsko: It’s a pity, that you cant remember the son of Holopupenko!
Solopii: Are you Ohrym’s son?
Hrytsko: Yes! It’s really so! And as you can see, your daughter and I fell in love. So let us get married!
Solopii: If you love each other, let it be so! But you must buy a drink to your future father!
Hrytsko: And I will drink to your health! To Solopii Cherevyk!
Solopii: Listen to me, wife! I have found a good guy for our daughter.
Hivria: Don’t be silly! What guys? You must think how to sell the wheat! All the fellas are beggars!
Solopii: No! Only his shirt costs more than your vet and shoes together! If you saw how he drank, you wouldn’t say so!
Hivria: Drank? You stupid man found a dirty drunkard for our daughter? I swear, it’s THAT beggar who obeyed me recently!
Solopii: He is a great young man! In spite of throwing a cloth into your face..
Hivria: What? How dare you! He dishonored your wife! I’ll never agree for this marriage! (придивляється до Солопія) You are drunk! Missed my broom?
Gipsy: Why are you so sad, Hrytsko? May I buy your bulls for twenty? Hrytsko: What a people you are! You think just about yourselves. You just want to play a trick with somebody.
Gipsy: I can see that you are very upset. Maybe you don’t want to marry a girl you have chosen?
Hrytsko: No, I stand on my word! But this silly man Cherevyk changed his mind. His wife rules above him! We laughed at her today, and she refused me. As for Solopii ... he is just an unfair man!
Gypsy: Will you sell your bulls to me for twenty if we make Solopii to give us Paraska?
Hrytsko: If you don’t lie, I’ll take just fifteen!
Gypsy: Deal! Don’t forget about your word! Sit and look!
Gypsy: People! Help! I was robbed! This cruel man has stolen my horse! Solopii: It’s not true! I don’t need your horse! I have just sold my old horse.
Gypsy: I saw him very well! The robber was the same face with you! Tie him! You won’t escape!
Solopii: Oh, my God! What can I do? Hrytsko: Solopii Cherevyk? Is it you?
Solopii: Help me, son. Ask anything you want!
Hrytsko: I want to marry Paraska, as you promised me.
Solopii: Fine! I primise! No, I swear! Let it be wedding!
Hrytsko: I believe you! Hey, gipsy, I know this man. He didn’t steel your horses! Look at him better!
Gypsy: (приглядається до Солопія) You are right! I can see now that he isn’t that robber! Release him!
Paraska: I’m so happy! He will come to marry me!
Oksana: And your stepmother will never beat you again!
Hrystia: You will be a wife! Your husband will protect you!
Paraska: He is so handsome! And brave! And he tells me many good things!
Oksana: Your stepmother has no power any more!
Hrystia: Will you invite us to your new house?
Paraska: My new house! … What if he didn’t come?
Solopii: My girl, your groom has come! Welcome him!
Solopii: Live in love and happiness, children!
Hivria: I don’t agree! You can’t get married!
Solopii: Stop, wife! I have decided! I don’t like to change my mind!
Hivria: But he is a beggar!.. But… But..
Storyteller: Dear friends! Love can overcome everything! Believe in your dreams and follow them!
Thank you for attention!
Be kind!
