HALLOWEEN The American Holiday that is taking Ukraine by Storm |
Halloween is a very old holiday that has its roots in Pagan era Europe. It was originally called All Hallows
Eve, and was believed to be the night before “the day of the saints”, where demons had free reign of the earth. When dawn came the saints would protect the Earth and it would be a holy day; but the night before, demons would roam the Earth and harm humans as
they waited for the sun to rise. To counter these demons, people began putting turnips in their windows after carving scary faces into them and placing candles inside so that they might scare away the demons roaming around
outside. This eventually turned into pumpkins and became what we now know as jack-olanterns.
Similar to the purpose of jack-o-lanterns, people started wearing scary masks and costumes so that if they went outside they could either blend in with or even scare away the demons roaming around. Later this would become trickor-treating as children took up the tradition, going from door to door asking for treats or else they would pull tricks on the house in the guise of demons. It is now more innocent than its history might suggest and one of the biggest and most beloved holidays in Western Europe and America.
At the Hlyboka Lyceum this year there where Halloween themed English clubs and a Halloween Party put on by teacher Zoya Stepanivna. At the Halloween Party, which took place on October 28th, pupils listened to the history of the holiday, watched videos, sang songs, and played various Halloween themed games. They also split into teams and had a “Who knows
more about Halloween” competition. The teams also had to find words in a wordsquare and put together the
parts of the skeleton. Finally they had to find ghosts around the Halloween decorated classroom and answer the questions of a Halloween themed quiz. The winners of this quiz received a prize.
The students had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the party. On top of all of it they also learned a little bit more about a culture outside of their own and practiced their
English skills.
disco. All the pupils enjoyed the party. I think it was one of the best events in our Lyceum. TRIP TO LVIV 8TH Grade Takes a Trip to Lviv by NASTIA CHUBREY games on the train, so we didn’t sleep. We arrived in Lviv in the morning. First we went to McDonalds. We like |
Traveling is very interesting. On the twenty-first of October my class went to Lviv. We went there by train. My classmates and I played many visited churches, museums, and the opera house. It was amazing. We bought some souvenirs in the special shops of that city. We had lunch in a very big café. It served
delicious national Ukrainian dishes.
The weather was very bad though; it was raining and foggy. That’s way we stayed in one more café. I liked my trip to Lviv very much.
