Mother’s Day Lesson Plan

Form: 3-4

Objectives : to teach children new phrases and lexical materials on this                               topic;

to develop listening, speaking and reading skills ;

to encourage children of learning English

Equipment : cards, pieces of coloured pepper, pictures, crayons.

Procedure

I Introduction

1. Teacher: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! Let’s start our work. All of you know a lot of holidays such as Christmas, St.Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and Halloween.

But today we’ll speak about the most warm - hearted holiday “ Mother’s Day” . Our lesson is about its history, symbols and traditions.

Who knows when we celebrate this holiday in Ukraine ? (students answers)

II Main Part

Let’s watch the video and know about the history of Mother’s Day. Be attentive because after each line you should read and translate.

but why do we celebrate Mother’s Day?

P:

Mother’s Day has been celebrated for many many centuries and ages Ancient Greeks and Romans celebrated it as a festival.So did the Christian people.

P:

But the Mother’s Day we all have come to know and celebrate has a different reason.

P:

Really? There’s another reason for it?

P:

Yes, and not a very happy story for it.

P:

Why? What happened, Tia?

P:

First you need to know about Ann Reeves Jarvis In the 1900 in the US, before the Civil War she started groups like the ‘Mothers’ Day Work Clubs’ that helped the local women take care of their children

P:

Later, these clubs came together and did many peace keeping activities.Wow!

P:

But the actual Mother’s Day did not come about till after 1905, when Ann passed away Her daughter Anna Jarvis decided to celebrate Mother’s Day as a way to celebrate the sacrifices moms make for their children.

P:

In May 1908, she had a huge celebration on the day with thousands of people joining.

By 1912, everybody was celebrating the Mother’s Day we know today.

P:

I thought you said there was a sad story too behind it?

P:

Well, as years passed by people started celebrating Mother’s Day with a lot of fanfare.

P:

But they forgot that the holiday was not just about gifts and treats but about remembering and honouring the many sacrifices mom’s make for their children!

P:

Oh! It just became a holiday...Yes, exactly

P:

And Anna Reeves Jarvis spent the rest of her life urging people to drop the show and pomp around the festival.

P:

Wow... Her whole life?Yes. You know she did not even marry and dedicated herself to the cause completely.

P:

Just in honour of the lovely mothers all around the world.You know, Tia. Tomorrow I will not go anywhere

P:

Let’s stay at home and plan a great day for mom

P:

We’ll not let her do any work and will pamper her like the way she pamper us every single day

P:

That’s a brilliant plan Tofu.Then, let us also buy a few things for breakfast and we can make her a delicious breakfast in bed!

Let’s act the dialogue between Billy and his mother . I need 2 pupils ( Billy and his mother). Read and play your role. Some pieces of equipment can help you to do it

 ( There are peas, carrots, potatoes, a spoon, a fork, a plate and a bib on the desk) .

 

Mother: Eat your peas , Billy.

              Mmm! They are very nice.

Billy:     I don’t want any peas

              I want some sweets.

M :        Eat your carrots , Billy

              Mmm! They are very nice.

B:          I don’t want any carrots

              I want some sweets.

M:         Eat your potatoes , Billy

              Mmm! They are very nice.

B:          I don’t want any potatoes

              I want some sweets.

B:   No!

“ A bouquet for mommy”

Look at the cards and repeat after me. There is a vase on the board .What flowers can we put into the vase for mom. Take the correct picture of a flower , make up the sentence as in the example and stick.

Greetings cards

Everyone has a piece of paper . Prepare your scissors , crayons, the glue and pens. Cut, to glue and write wishes for your lovely mothers. You can see an example on the board.
