Answer Key and Writing Guide

Grade 11 • Unit 1 Being a Student

Vocabulary and grammar: 1 point for each correct answer. Writing: 8 points using the rubric below.
Total: 24 points.

Variant 1

Vocabulary: 1 autonomous; 2 resource; 3 revise; 4 strategy; 5 achieve; 6 assessment; 7 exhausted; 8
attend. Extra words: distraction, average.

Grammar: 1 organise, will have finished; 2 had, would speak; 3 will not pass, revise; 4 were, would give;
5 does not hurry, will miss; 6 would you do, got; 7 will understand, ask; 8 knew, would tell.

Writing

—

sample answer (91 words): To prepare well for an English exam, I make a study plan a week in

advance. First, I revise a few topics each day and write new words in a vocabulary notebook. If I find a
difficult grammar rule, I ask my teacher or look for an extra explanation. I also do practice tasks and
check my mistakes. If I take short breaks, I can concentrate for longer. The evening before the exam, I
pack my things and go to bed early. If I stay calm and work regularly, I will feel more confident.

Variant 2

Vocabulary: 1 independent; 2 cheat; 3 pass; 4 supplementary; 5 concentrate; 6 memorise; 7 progress; 8
responsibility. Extra words: take, mark.

Grammar: 1 use, will remember; 2 had, would concentrate; 3 leaves, will be; 4 knew, would raise; 5 do
not prepare, will not feel; 6 would you do, needed; 7 gives, will improve; 8 were, would not feel.

Writing

—

sample answer (88 words): A successful student is curious, responsible and organised. They

attend lessons, listen carefully and ask questions when something is unclear. At home, they review
their notes and plan their work instead of waiting until the last day. If students practise regularly, they
usually make steady progress. A good student also learns from mistakes rather than feeling
discouraged. They can use dictionaries, books and other resources to learn more. If I managed my time
better, I would feel less stressed and have more time for activities I enjoy.
