*Tenses of `to be`(is ,isn`t\are,aren`t\am,am not)

*Do\Don`t

*Linking  Words and Phrases

*If…/Unless…

You shoud be able to talk about:

  • A person`s appearance and character

                      Review Guide-part two                                                                                      Grammar

*To Be

*To be is one of the most important but most confusing verbs in English.It does not have a good translation in Ukrainian in the Present tense.In Ukraine ,you can simple say “I…Doctor”.

In  English , you say” I am a doctor”.

*Present Tense:

                            *I                             am

                            *He,she,it               is

                            *You,we,they        are

*Do/Don`t|Did/Didn`t

        *   ”To do” translates що робити. But in English there are more uses for the word. We use do for most yes/no questions.

       *  In Ukrainian, you simple write the question like a statement with question mark.

                 =Example:      “ У тебе є ручка?” “ У тебе є ручка.”

       *In English ,this is rare and only works if you are questions a big surprise.

          =Example “He failed his test.’ | “He failed his test?”

*Usually, we use do/don`t in yes or no questions about actions.

            =Ти знаєш нашу роботу? |Do you know our work?

            = Ти робила нашу роботу?|Did you do our work?

       *The answer usually has yes or no with do /don`t

                    = Do you know our work?-> Yes ,I do./No, I don`t.

                    =Did you do our work? ->      Yes, I did./No, I didn`t.

*Linking Words and Phrases

= Linking words show logical relations between sentences or parts of  a sentence. They are very important and make sentences clearer.

= To show time:    When,  before  ,as soon as;

= To list points:    Firstly, secondly. thirdly……;

= To add more points : and, moreover, also,…..;

= To show cause or effect: because, so, as a result,…;

=To give examples:   for example,  such as….;

= To show contrast: however, on one hand ,on the other hand,……;

=To describe the conditions : if,whether,unless,only if ,……;

= To introduce a conclusion: all in all,  to sum up,….;

Writing Practice:

What  do you like about your school? What do you dislike? If you could change something about your school,what would you change? Why would you change?

*Relatives Causes:

  • Who-People
  • Which-Things
  • Where-Places
  • When-Times
  • Why-Reasons
  • Whose-Possessive of Who

Definite  relative  Clauses come after a noun and give us essential informatin about the subject.        We cannot understand the sentence without it.

  • You CANNOT use commas:
  • You CAN replace who,which.when.why,and that.
  • Some species of mammals that are kept in the Zoo are also very rare.
  • Non -Defining Relative Clauses give us extra information .We can understand the sentence without it.
  • You MUST use commas.
  • You CANNOT replace the pronouns with that.
  • You CANNOT remove the relative pronoun.
  • Example:Askania-Nova <a place where I`ve never been before,is famous.

Which/Where:

  • We can use”which” when we are focusing the subject.If preposition is used before the relative pronoun,it is likely that which will be used rather than where.
  • “It`s the city in which the worst environmental problems exit.”
  • When talking about a location without a preposition, we use “where”.
  • “It`s the city where the worst problem exist”

That/What:

  • When the relative pronoun is defining, you can use “that” rather than “what”.
  • “Anything that she says is bound to be rubbish”.(Defining because “anything is bound to be rubbish” doesn’t make  sense. It has different meaning.)
  • Be careful. If there is no relative clause ,we cannot use “that”.
  • “What they told us about came as a surprise to us all.”(This is NOT a relative clause. ”What they told us about “Is the original subject and there is no additional information added)
  • Example of a relative clause: ”That which they told us about came as a surprise”(That is a subject. ”Which they told us about “is the defining relative  clauce.)
