                                         “ Open Ukraine to the world ”

Aims:

 - to systematize st’s knowledge about Ukraine

-  to develop monologue skills

- to develop  critical thinking

Procedure:

1. Warming up. 

1. Read the poem and try to guess the topic of our lesson.

 

My land is so beautiful and free Ukraine

Ukraine, the dearest land I can see

When down the river I go boating

And birds are flying high above

I hear a song and it is flowing

For those trees, the land I love.

Thanks to its favorable position Ukraine is famous for its unusual culture, cuisine and traditions all over the world.

As far as you know Ukraine is famous not only for its clothing and cuisine. Our country has given to the world famous politicians, artists, poets, sportsmen, doctors, scientists and a lot of advanced technologies that are in use all over the world. So, let’ s remind some of the interesting facts.

 

The first Constitution in the world was created by a Ukrainian, Pylyp Orlyk, on 5 April 1710, the day he was elected hetman of the Zaporizhzhia army.

 

Lviv is the birthplace of the kerosene lamp. Today, the Lviv museum-restaurant «Гасова Лямпа» is located on the site of its creation.

 

Only six monasteries in the world have the status of Lavra, and four of them are in Ukraine.

 

The Petrykivka painting, which was created in the village of Petrykivka in the Dnipro region, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

Ukrainian Yurii Burdiak saved Winston Churchill's life. During the Anglo-Boer War in Africa, he saved Churchill, then a journalist, from being shot.

 

Ukraine's population is one of the most educated, and the number of people with higher education per capita is higher than the European average.

 

The Zaporozhian Sich is believed to have been one of the world's first democratic entities.

 

The world's only trolleybus ticket museum is located in Kyiv. The museum has the world's largest collection of travel tickets.

 

Ukraine is the home to the longest gypsum cave in the world and the second longest in general, the Оптимістична Cave.

 

In 1965, the Kyiv surgeon Mykola Amosov invented antithrombotic prostheses and performed the first heart mitral valve surgery. Amosov also founded the Cardiac Surgery Center that became the world's top centre of global innovation in medicine. Almost one hundred thousand heart operations were performed at the centre, including the world's first heart surgery in a pressure.

 

Élie Metchnikoff is the author of fundamental works in immunology, bacteriology, epidemiology, and studying the human ageing process. He was the first to develop a coherent theory of protective systems of the human body. For the development of the human immune system concept, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1908.

 

The first heart transplant for the child was performed by the director of the Heart Institute Borys Todurov together with the head of the Myocardial Pathology and Organ and Tissue Transplantation Department of the Heart Institute Gavril Kovtun and Lviv colleagues.

The patient is a 13-year-old boy Maxym from the Volyn region, whose condition was critical. The operation was successful. The child got a chance for long and happy life.
