Procedure
1. Introduction
1.1. Warming up. Describing pictures
Start the lesson by informing pupils that today we are going to speak about choosing a career, to study such grammatical phenomenon as the gerund and to watch a video “The career planning process”.
Ask pupils to look at the pictures and say which job they may enjoy doing and why. They should substantiate their choice.
Then ask pupils to think about advantages and disadvantages of each job.(See Worksheet 1)
1.2. Completing the sentences
Hand out worksheet 2. Ask pupils to complete the sentences. Tell them to work individually.
With the whole class check the answers. (See Worksheet 2)
1.3. Defining the words “job”, “career”, “occupation” and “profession”. Small group activity
Assemble pupils into groups of four. Hand out the blank sheets of paper, markers and ask them to define the words “job”, “career”, “occupation” and “profession”. They are going to choose one representative of the group to present their group definition. Then compare their answers with those in the dictionary. (See Worksheet 3)
Ask pupils to make up sentences with these words.
2. The main part of the lesson
2.1. Watching the video “The career planning process”
Pre-watching activity. Discussion in groups
Inform pupils that they are going to watch the video“The career planning process”. Ask them to think over 5 steps they would undertake to choose a future career. Then discuss their answers in groups.
While-watching activity.Filling in the table.(See Worksheet 4)
Before playing the video give out the worksheet 4 and ask pupils to write down their own steps in career planning process. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYLR9-PH10M).
Play video twice if necessary.
Follow-up activity.Comparing
Compare their steps with those they’ve watched in the video. Ask pupils to think over their actions on each step. Have them share their thoughts.
2.2. Grammar introduction (The Gerund). Matching up activity
Explain to pupils rules of formation and use of the Gerund. Ask them to write down common verbs followed by the Gerund. (See Worksheet 5)
Hand out worksheet 6 and tell pupils to match both parts of sentences. (See Worksheet 6)
Then ask them to make up 5 sentences with the Gerund.
2.3. Speaking group activity
Ask pupils to divide in 3 groups. The leader of each group chooses the card with a task. The task is to advise the classmate to make the right choice. Pupils should consider the personal qualities of the classmates and the traits of character. Discuss the task in groups. (See Worksheet 7)
3. Conclusion
Creative writing
For homework get pupils to watch the video “The career planning process” again and to make up a composition about choosing a career based on steps in the video.
