Lesson Plan

Topic: “Hello”

Level BEGINNER

Aims: 1) to develop skills of telling and asking for personal information;

2) to develop dialogue speaking skills;

3) to develop memory, logical thinking, critical thinking, attention;

4) to bring up respectful attitude to other students, tolerance in  cooperation.

Equipment: multicolored letters of ABC, video, laptop, whiteboard.

Procedure.

  1. Warming up.

T: Greeting and to get acquainted with the teacher students have to unscramble the teacher`s name on board.

On the first day of school I have plenty of pre-cut letters in lots of different colors on a table. As the children come in they find the letters to spell their names and glue them together. To get to know each other the students stick the letters together on their note-book and spell them.

Example: S1. Hello everyone. My name is Julia. J-U-L-I-A. Nice to meet you.

  1. Main body.

Activity 1: Poem “This is me”

T: we all want to know more about each other. So, you will write a poem about yourselves. The first line is your first name, the second line is three words that describe you, the third line is three things you like, the fourth line is three things you do not like, the fifth line is three movies you have seen (could do books they have read, but movies usually get a better response), the sixth line is three things they like about school, the seventh line is a place you would like to visit, the eighth line is three things you like eating, the ninth line is three clothes you like wearing, and the tenth line is you last name.

Then students take the poems up and read them aloud, and the next day I have the students guess which poem goes with which person. I read the poems aloud, omitting the first and last lines. I usually give bonus points to the one who gets the most correct.

Activity 2: (pair work) “First day interview.”

In this useful first day of class speaking activity, students write get to know you questions to ask a new classmate and then interview them and use the information to introduce them to the class. First, students read five interview questions and create five more getting to know you questions of their own to ask a partner. In pairs, students then take turns asking their partner the questions, noting down the answers. Next, students use their partner's answers to complete an introductory text, creating five more sentences of their own. Lastly, students introduce their partner to the class by reading the text aloud. As the other students listen, they write down questions they want to ask the student being introduced. Students then ask these questions at the end of each introduction.

(Example: 1) What`s your name? 2) What school do you study at? 3) What is your favourite lesson? 4) What is your hobby? 5) What is your favourite food?)

Activity 3: (15 min moving around the classroom) “The question is….”

Every student gets a card with the question and a suggested answer. All students move around the classroom and ask each other questions and note down the answers. Everyone should ask everyone else. When the time is over, the teacher gives a signal. Students take their seats and present the result of their survey like this: “Three students have got a pet cat as well as I do” or “Ten students know 2 languages, English and Ukrainian, just like me.”

Suggested questions and answers are: 1) I speak 2 languages (English and Ukrainian). How many languages do you speak?

2) I have a pet dog and two cats. How many pets have you got?

3) I enjoy cooking borshch. What dish do you like cooking?

4) At the weekend I like shopping. What is your favourite free time activity?

5) My favourite school subject is English. What is your favourite school subject?

6) I like wearing hoodies most of all. What is your favourite item of clothes?

7) I am a football fan. What is your favourite sport?

8) I enjoy watching detectives. What is your favourite film genre?

9) I play DOTS on-line. What computer game do you like?

10) I have tasted dragon fruit. What exotic food have you tasted? Etc.

  1. Summing up.

T: Explaining the home assignment (to write a few sentences about any of your new friends) and every student`s work assessment.
