1. In a minute, think and write down as many jobs as possible. Compare with your partner.
2. Look at your job list and say who works: 9-5? shifts? at the weekends? long hours? on their own?

These words are the key words of the text. Read them and their definitions. What do you expect the text to be about?

• tough job (work that difficult)
• beat (to defeat sbd/sth)
• elite (the most skilled people of a group)
• risk (to allow the possibility of harm)
• remote areas (places that are not easily accessible)
• put out (to extinguish sth. often a fire)
• fit (healthy and in a good physical form)
• fire zone (an area than is alight with fire)
• padded (having thick material making it protected)
• drop (to let sth fall).

4. Reading „Hot job”

      Smokejumpers are elite firefighters who risk their lives fighting forest fires in remote areas. They bravely parachute out of aeroplanes into burning forests, where they quickly get to work putting the fire out.

      Smokejumpers duties are not easy. They have to do long, tough training before they can become part of a team. Smokejumpers need to be very good parachutists and know how to read maps to get out of the forest safely. „To be smokejumpers you need to be very fit, and able to work for long hours in difficult conditions”, says Zach Meyers, a smokejumpers at West Yellowstone. „We train all the time and were always trying to improve”.

     When their parachute into a fire zone they wear a padded jump jacket and trousers, boots, gloves, a face mask and a halmet. They also carry a backpack with some food and water.

      The aeroplane drops the tools and equipment they need to fight the fire. „This job keeps me happy”, says Zach. „I love the feeling I get when I jump out of the aeroplane and fly through the air. I wouldn’t want any other job in the world.”
