                                                                       LESSON

TOPIC:  DOS AND DON’TS IN  JAPAN  AND UKRAINE When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

OBJECTIVES:

-         developing students’ speech habits;

-         improving skills in using vocabulary and grammar;

-         teaching students to communicate and enrich their knowledge and outlook by means of English;

-         stimulating interest in cultures of different countries;

-         enhancing listening skills by watching an authentic video;

-         using IT technologies for learning English;

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:  by the end of the lesson learners will be able to

-         make dialogues;

-         work in groups;

-         use new vocabulary in speech;

-         work on the online platforms PADLET, QUIZLET;

-         elicit the main information;

-         evaluate personal progress;

-         use Present Perfect;

-         use imagination and critical thinking;

 

MATERIALS: handouts, posters, a video, online board PADLET, platform QUIZLET, a camera

                                                          PROCEDURE

I INTRODUCTION

  1. Interviewing pupils about their travelling experience. Each pupil gets the card, goes around the class and writes down their findings.

  1. The pupils introduce the results of their survey and practise using PRESENT PERFECT TENSE.             
  2. Predictions about our lesson: Ps I think we’ll describe pictures….
  3. Dividing into teams.

Pupils are given names of cities and countries, they are looking for the country their city belongs to.

II MAIN ACTIVITIES

  1. Chinese Whisperer (guessing what country are we travelling to)

The children are divided  into two teams, they stand in a row. The first pupil gets the picture, tries to remember the name of each object, then whisper the names to the next pupil (without showing the picture), the last pupil should name the country, the pictures are referring to.

  1. Putting the words in the right order.

in, Rome ,when, do the Romans, do, as, do (When in Rome, do as the Romans do)

Pupils explain how they understand this proverb.

  1. Watching the video. While watching, pupils make notes in FACT FILE.

  2. Game BELIEVE-DON’T BELIEVE

Pupils listen to the statements and if they believe, they go to one corner of the room, marked BELIEVE. If they don’t, they go to the corner, marked DON’T BELIEVE.

  1.     In Italy you’ll insult a chef if you ask for more cheese.
  2.     In China it’s impolite to finish eating everything on your plate.
  3.     Don’t ask for salt and pepper in Portugal.
  4.     In France, giving even number of flowers is OK.
  5.     In Tibet, sticking your tongue at somebody means you’re greeting them with respect.
  6.     In Ethiopia people eat from one plate.
  7.     In Japan all members of the family wash in the same bath.
  8.     In some African countries if you say to a person you first meet “Your hat is fantastic”, he will present it to you.
  1. Working in teams. Pupils work out some typical rules, customs and traditions in Ukraine.

There are posters: GREETINGS;  ON THE STREET;   WELCOMING GUESTS ;  TABOOS.

 

  1.      Pupils read the message from an English boy Andrew on the online platform PADLET .

  1.     The speaker from each group introduces the result of their work in front of each poster.

Each video response is filmed and uploaded to the online platform PADLET.
