Good morning, dear boys and girls. Glad to see you. Are you fine? Is everybody present? Though it doesn't look like winter, this season has already come. Nearly all the children like winter because it brings a lot of fun and holidays. Do you like winter? Today we're having not a usual lesson. It is connected with a beautiful winter holiday, the most popular holiday in Great Britain. It is the favourite holiday of all English children and grown-ups, which they will celebrate in about two weeks. We will speak and read about this holiday, have a competition and sing a song. I hope you'll enjoy our English lesson and be friendly to each other. I wish you good luck! Let's start!

I have already told you that you will have a competition. There will be three teams. I suggest the following names for your teams:
a) Snowflakes b) Snowmen c) Santa Clauses
During the lesson you' Il get such cards for your work. The red toy means excellent work, the blue one is for good and the green toy means satisfactory work. At the end of the lesson we'll count the cards and choose the winner.
I suggest that you should look at the pictures on the screen and guess what holiday we are going to speak about.
P-s: We'll speak about Christmas.
Right! Can you name all the subjects in the pictures? (Christmas Tree, Santa Claus, Christmas cards, stockings) What do you know about Christmas?
Pupils' replies.
Thank you. You are absolutely right. Every year people of all Christian World celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ - that's why we call this time Christmas. It is a magical season when families and friends get together to share the customs and traditions which have been around for centuries.
People in Europe celebrate this holiday on the 25th of December, but when do we celebrate Christmas in Ukraine? (On the 7th of January).
That's right. We celebrate it on January, 7. Every country has its own customs and traditions and today let's talk a little about British ways of celebrating Christmas. Nowadays people start preparing for the holiday at the beginning of December. They buy lots of presents and send cards to their friends and relatives. It is mostly a family holiday. Englishmen decorate their houses with green leaves, paper decorations, Christmas Trees and colourful electric lights. The traditional colours of Christmas are red and green. Green represents the continuance of life through the winter. Red symbolizes the blood of Jesus at his Crucifixion. But the main symbol of Christmas is the Christmas Tree.

Pre-reading
Tell me, please, where do you usually take the Christmas Tree? Do you know where the British people take the main Christmas Tree and where it stands? You'll find this information and some other interesting facts about Christmas in the texts on your desks.
While-reading
So, look through them and try to express the main idea of each text in one or two words.
Now read the texts again and tell your classmates what you have read about since you've got different information.
Post-reading
Now answer the questions bellow the texts:
Who gives the city of London a Christmas tree every year?
Where does the Christmas tree stand?
What do English people do before Christmas?
What is the traditional Christmas dinner?
What do people put into the pudding?
What does it mean if you find a button (a horseshoe, a ring) in your piece of pudding?
When does the celebration of Christmas start?
What is Boxing Day? What do people usually do on that day?
What do children do on the Christmas Eve?

Of course, all the children wait for Santa Claus. The most important thing about Santa is that he always brings presents for children! Lots of presents! And today Santa Claus has sent you presents, chocolates and sweets, but he wants you to answer his questions.
Santa Claus is very curious. He refers to your experience and he wants you to ask questions about Christmas in the Present Perfect Tense. Do you remember how it is formed? (Has/have + V3) Look at the screen.
Ask questions in the present perfect tense (special cards for each team). Task for the first team Use these verbs: to read to decorate to watch
Use these prompts:
Christmas TV programmes
Christmas Tree
Christmas poems and stories about Santa Claus Task for the second team Use these verbs: to be to see to celebrate Use these prompts: the Christmas tree to London the New Year
Task for the third team Use these verbs: to eat to drink to sing use these prompts: Christmas carols
Christmas pudding
Tea with lemon and jam for Christmas breakfast
Use the Present Perfect Tense in your questions and ask them the students of the other teams. (The beginning of the questions is given to the teams on the screen)
Have you ever. . ?

I suggest that you should read out the phrases in your SB on page 96. These are phrasal verbs. Repeat after me. You may know some of them. Try to guess their meaning with the help of pictures and match them. You should remember them. Now do exercise 1, p. 96. That's nice. Let's do exercise 2, p.96. Some of you will go to the blackboard and the others will work on their own. Now I want you to make micro-dialogues using these phrases. We're going to listen to some of you.
That's great!
