Project “Eco-school”
Type of the lesson: lesson-conference
Form: 9
Objectives:
Equipment: the board, laptop (learning apps-Natural disasters, Google classroom “The Eco-school of my dream”),video “What we have already done.”, cardboard blanks in the shape of the building, roof, vegetable garden, recycling bins for the project, the poster with a dead tree.
Motto: Be the change that a sustainable world needs.
Epigraph: We have not inherited the Earth from our fathers. We are also borrowing it for our children. Lester R.Brown
Procedure
T:Dear pupils,we are here today to share our ideas and show a great desire to change smth.
The ecological situation of our country leaves much to be desired and our town is polluted by plants. But we are only pupils, can we change smth? Can we make our surrounding cleaner and greener ? I think, yes!
Our today`s lesson is dedicated to the conference where we`ll present the project “eco-school”. What does the expression “eco-school” mean?
P:Eco-school is the largest global sustainable school program. It starts in the classroom and expands to the community.
P:So all we have now, we borrow from the future generation.
T:Our first step is the discussion and exchanging ideas and later we should create the solution.
II. The main part of the lesson.
Checking out h/w
(For the home assignment pupils were asked to create their own vision of eco-schools in “Paint” and present their works via Google classroom)
Updating reference knowledge
Learning apps. Matching the picture and the description(deforestation-forests are destroyed by cutting down trees and not replanting them)
Presenting groups of specialists.
T:So let`s meet our eco-experts. They will interview our intelligent and hardworking specialists:
A group of determined but modest pupils, they are architects.
A team of future farmers. They are caring and kind. Their parents say “They`ve got green thumbs”
And our positive but sometimes strict teachers, who`s always got their own problem solving vision.
T:I hope we`ll be able to solve all the tasks not only for today but for our future, because the protection of the environment concerns everyone living on the planet.
Presenting a project “Eco-school”
Exp1: Can you tell us about your project? How did it begin?
Exp2:What have you already done?
(Video Dubbing)
P1: Last year we decided to use only low-energy light bulbs. We have changed some and we are planning to change more.
P2: Recycling paper gives us extra money for our school funds and needs.
P3: Giving the second life for the plastic bottles was our motto in the 7th form. So we made some armchairs for the most important events at our school.
P4: We usually sort garbage living school, it`s our good habit and we`re proud of it.
P5: After primary school our parents helped us to set up plastic window frames, so we have been saving the heat of central heating for 3 years.
P6: As a part of energy saving program we plant cherry trees every autumn. There is a proverb “The more you plant, the more you`re conscious person”.
Ex1:I`d like to ask architects, who are planning to build a school. You`ve made a model, so how will this eco-school look?
Arch1: We can explain it to our experts. We are going to stick the model to the board.
Arch2:First of all we`ll have solar panels on the roof, there are fifty panels altogether.
Ex2:And will they provide power for the whole school?
Arch3:Yes that`s the idea. It`ll save a lot of money on electricity.
Ex1: So what other plans do you have to make our school more environmentally friendly?
Arch4:We`ll use low-energy light bulbs in all the classrooms. In collaboration with landscape designers we are going to place a bicycle rack next to the entrance so all the pupils who live far from school could park their bikes.
Ex2: And farmers tell us why are you here?
(Presentation)
F1: A lot of energy goes into our food before it gets to the plates: growing, transporting and cooking are all very valuable, so if we just waste our food when it reaches us all this effort is wasted too.
F2: All food including “ugly” vegetables have used energy to grow. Unfortunately they are dumped by farmers. How can we waste food when the people in some countries are hungry?!
T1: We are teachers, and we are going to teach our pupils how to stop wasting the food, which could have been eaten. As a fact the food waste has a great impact on the environment.
Ex2: As we could understand you are offering to make a compost heap for growing vegetables?
F3:Of course we`ll grow vegetables and fruits for our school breakfasts. They will be very organic and much cheaper than buying food from local supermarkets.
F4:We`ll also have chickens, rabbits, ducks and other animals.
Ex1: And will they go into the school breakfast too?
F4: Oh, no! That would be terrible. They`ll be pets and they`ll be useful. They will eat the leftovers from the kitchen and the hens will provide eggs.
Ex1: And the question for the teachers:
Will your lessons be different from non eco-school lessons?
T2: Most of our lessons will be similar to lessons in any secondary school. But in our science lessons we`ll focus more on environmental issues like climate change and global warming.
T3: Then in our technology lessons we`ll learn about things like renewable energy and even how to make solar panels.
T4: We are going to increase pupil`s knowledge about recycling and saving energy.
Providing more outdoor lessons will be our first step.
III.Summarizing
T: So you have presented all the ideas, but all the educational institutions have got their own logos. It`s a high time to choose one for your eco-school.
(Groups present their logos discussing 3 variants)
Ex 2: Please explain your choice.
T1: We decided to choose number 3 logo because it`s clever and simple. Secondly it`s more effective than the other 2.The logo showing vegetables doesn`t look serious, so 3 reasons for the logo number 3.
Activity “The dead tree
T:(the teacher shows a big picture of dead tree). Look at this tree Is it beautiful? Is it full of leaves? Does it give any shelter or food to animals and birds? Can it give air?
Let`s cure the tree which is a symbol of wildlife for us. Everybody can do smth to help nature. Choose a “leaf”, make a report and stick it to the tree.
(Break-As for me I`ll try not to break brunches, bushes and flowers.
Recycle-As for me I`ll recycle all the bottles and won`t throw them)
Is the tree beautiful now? Who has cured it? Must we take care of nature? Do you agree, that you can help the world to be better and cleaner and safer?
Home assignment
T:Write down a composition on the topic “Measures to prevent ecological problems: international, local and personal level.
Evaluation.
All students will be evaluated. During the lesson attention will be paid to the accurate usage of the target language. While working in teams the students will be given points for each correct answer.
