Lesson Plan

Височин Н.А.
Concept: Understanding and following a map to successfully get to a predetermined destination
Level: Beginner
Objectives: As a result of this lesson, students will:
• learn to identify treasure-related vocabulary
• learn basic map-reading skills
• review and demonstrate their knowledge of alphabet, numbers, jobs, family members, countries and their flags, main landmarks of London, prepositions of place
• develop critical thinking skills
Assessment: Observe students’ ability to find the “treasure” by using map, to check their knowledge of studied material
Materials: map, poster with London’s landmarks, vocabulary cards, poster with the alphabet, flashcards “jobs”, “flags”, “number ice-cream’, “treasure”, letters on separate cards (adhesive paper), logos of each location according to the map, answer sheet,
Secret message: “Your present is in room 221”
Gather both teams and explain that solving the puzzles and doing the tasks at the locations, they will gather the numbered letters, which they have to stick into the appropriate boxes on their maps according to numbers. The more letters they have – the closer they get to the treasure – the message says where to look for it. The number of given letters depends on the number of right answers of the task. If the team doesn’t get enough letters to make up the “secret message”, after doing all the location it may come back to the location, do the wrong tasks again and get more letters. Besides, at each location students have to earn letters of the secret word, which gives them the right to take the “treasure” when they find it. At each location each team gets a sticker on the map to see what is left. The order of the locations doesn’t matter. Each team has its own color of the letters and a mark of the same color on the map, to avoid mixing up the letters.
The secret word letters don’t have numbers, so students have to make up the word out of the letters.
The curator of each location has an Answer sheet for each team where he/she marks the correct answers, the number of correct answers and the number of letters he/she gives to the team.
The location is in the school library. Stick the Alphabet poster on a wall not far from the library – the students can run and look at it while doing the task, if they have any problems. But they lose time.
The task is to arrange the given words into the alphabetical order.
