I COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT MY COMPUTER AT HOME

My name is Kate. I use my computer all the time. It is like a typewriter and address book for me and it is also used for checking my spelling. Besides I can go on the Internet and discover everything about anything, it is a brilliant source of information. I’ve designed my own website and I’m getting loads of information for school. Besides some websites are packed with quizzes, games and competitions, it is all you need for hours of fun on your computer. You can play and learn on it. It is absolutely essential. I don’t know how I ever managed without it.

But my elder sister thinks people are getting a bit too dependent on computers. She thinks that we rely on them too much. My sister says, that we can’t rely on all the information, we don’t know who it has been written by or where it is coming from. To be dependent on anything, especially a lifeless machine that can quite easily break down, is not good. Besides, computers shouldn’t replace seeing your friends.

These two people have been survivors all their lives. They both have achieved very different versions of the American Dream. One of them is Bill Clinton, the other is Bill Gates. Sort out the two stories about them and write about these self-made people.

  1. This is a story about one of the richest people in the world.
  2. This is a story about one of the world’s most powerful people.
  3. His childhood began in the 1940s in a small town in Arkansas.
  4. He was born in the Seattle .
  5. His father was a lawyer and his mother-president of the Junior League.
  6. He was brought up by a mother who was a nurse and an alcoholic stepfather.
  7. He was a skinny prep school kid who spent all his free time in the computer lab.
  8. He, even in his school days, was the smooth saxophone player who used his music to meet women.
  9. He was elected a senator at “Boys’ Nation” at 16.
  10.  He started his first computer company at high school.

5. Практикування діалогічного мовлення.

T: Make up dialogues using the following hints and expressing your own attitude.

  • I don’t think children learn much from computers. They can’t learn about life from a computer.
  • The Internet is very useful. There is more information on the internet than in the world’s biggest library.
  • Computers are bad for your health. It is more useful to spend time outdoor.
