Hang gliding is an air sport in which a pilot flies a light and non-motorized foot-launch aircraft called a hang glider that is of a delta wing design.
Hang glider pilots are suspended from their gliders by a special harness, and launch from hills facing into wind. Hang gliding is not however limited to upland environments. In the flatlands, hang gliders can also be towed aloft by a land based motorized winch, or behind a micro light aircraft.
Paragliding the sport of cross-country gliding using a specially designed parachute shaped like flexible wings.
Paragliders are not cheap, although they do represent one of the least expensive ways to get into the air. A new competition paraglider is likely to cost over £3,500.
Zip Lining (also know as ziplining) is a sport that has become popular in recent years. Zip lining consist of participants “zipping” between platforms on a series of cables. It is also used as a method of travel in place of bridges.
Sand boarding (also known as Sand Surfing) is a board sport similar to snowboarding that takes place on sand dunes rather than snow-clad slopes. It involves sliding down, or across, a sand dune while standing with both feet strapped to a board. More daring people use a board with no bindings, a method that is considered by many as much more dangerous.
Sky diving was developed in the early 1990s, this extreme sport features two-person teams who dive out of airplanes together. One of the teammates is the "surfer," the person who, during a 60-second free fall, performs a variety of loops, spins, and other maneuvers with a five-foot-long board strapped to his feet. The surfer's partner, known as the "camera flyer," uses a helmet-cam to send a live-feed shot of his teammate's acrobatics to a panel of judges down on the ground, who score the surfer on artistic merit and technical ability. Participants note that while the surfer is the one who attracts all of the attention, the camera flyer has to be at the top of his game as well. Camera flyers have to be able to skillfully maneuver around their teammates so as to show off their abilities from the best angles. At the end of the 60-second period, both participants pull their parachutes and float to the ground to see their score.
Free soloing, is a form of free climbing where the climber (the free soloist) forgoes ropes, harnesses and other protective gear while ascending, and relies only on his or her physical strength and climbing ability. Free solo climbing should not be confused with general free climbing, in which gear is typically used for safety in case of a fall, but not to assist the climb.
Parkour is a form of movement that stresses efficiency and speed, requiring you to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. Free Running is similar, but it also involves aesthetic movements such as flips, spins and many other forms of flair. Read on to find out how to get started in either of these two methods.
