The Birthday Child
Level-starter

- to broaden cultural outlook.
Equipment: a tape-recorder, envelopes with tasks, riddles, cards with jigsaw sentences, video film.
Set of pictures for the collage.

2. Watching Video
T: Now I want you to watch a video film.
(Children watch a scene from the animated cartoon “Maliuk and Karlson”
While they are watching, the teacher recites a poem.)
And tomorrow is his birthday too.
His birthday is every day.
The topic of our lesson is “The Birthday Child”.
T: I saw a dream last night. What did I see?
Possible answers:
P1. You saw Winnie the Pooh.
P2. As for me it was Garfield.
P3. I think you saw the cat, so on.
T: You are wrong. It was a big cake and…you my dear pupils. When is your birthday? What is your favourite colour?
T: Irynka is a Birthday Child today.
It’s birthday time
Time for games and time for toys,
Time for happy girls and boys,
Time for a cake and presents too.
(Teacher is making a collage on the magnet board. The children are looking at it.)
T: How old is she today? Match, please, a word with a figure.
Key: She is eight.
T: Let’s say a greeting in chorus:
Hip, hip, hooray
It’s Ira’s birthday today
She has eight candles
What a happy day!
(Jazz Chant “What do you want for birthday?”)
T: So, let’s play a game. Take each of you an envelope. Here you are. Open it, please. Find a partner.
Ask a partner what you want for birthday.
Patterns:
P1. What do you want? –P2. I want a birthday cake.
(The children use set of pictures: a birthday party, guests, a present, a birthday cake, a candle, make a wish, a birthday hat, a birthday whistle, a balloon from the envelope.)
T: What does Irynka want? Ask your partner.
Samples What does she want?
She wants a birthday present.
(Children stick set of pictures onto the collage)
T: In fact she wants many guests.
T: Holiday without many guests is not a holiday. Take your evaluation cards to fill in and do the quiz “Who are the guests?”

4. There are a lot of guests here. Who can swallow a piece of cake with you?
T: 4-5 points. Very bad guests hate to make presents.
8-10 points. Not bad guests don’t want to make presents for a Birthday child.
11-12 points. Great! Nice guests make the present for you.
(The teacher shows the fairy-tales heroes to the pupil and add them onto the collage.)
T: Help them to be modern, remember and read the rules, please.
Pair-work with jigsaw congratulation.
T: Children, you made the birthday cards at home. Change them, make up sentences and read.

(They put hands down and sit down.)
T: The bridge was one second ago. Now it is in the words. How many words do you know that end with ”-ow”? Use the letters to help you finish the words, read and translate into Ukrainian.
T: The Birthday Child painted a portrait. (She shows it to the guests).
Stand in a circle. The Birthday Child wants you to pick up papers of different colours from her hat. Those words are the answers to the riddles.
4. You can ride a sled on it.
T: Well- done! It’s hot here. What’ll we drink? Make a word from three letters e, t, a.
Possible answers: eat, ate, tea.
Remember that

Буде .....або какао.
Key: Чайник, чай.
T: Look at four pictures and translate into English.
The needed answers: -
- A cup of tea, please.
- Here you are. Take it please.
- There is a dead fly in the cup. The fly is swimming.
- Do you want it alive?
T: It’s only the joke.
T: We have been at birthday party. Look at our common collage and sing a song. “Happy Birthday to You!”
To sum up the lesson we’ll finish the chant. What did she want for her birthday?
