Text
Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. There is a legend about its founding. Once there were3 brothers: Kyi, Shchek and Khoriv. They lived with their sister Lybid. They founded a city on one of the hills above the Dnipro and called it Kyiv after the oldest brother. And in honour of the youngest brothers one hill was named Shchekavytsya, another – Krorevytsa, the river was called Lybid after their sister. An ancient chronicle tells that in 882 Prince Oleh of Novgorod seized Kyiv and said : “This will be the mother of all Russian towns!”
The East Slav tribes united in a single Old Rus state and Kyiv was made the capital of it. During 14-th, 15-th, 16-th century Ukraine fought against the Turkish-Tatar tyranny. The Ukrainian people defended their independence and national culture.
In June, 1941 facist Germany attacked our country. The Great Patriotic War began. Those were hard days for Kyiv. Over two years . Kyiv was under fascist occupation. Fascists ruined Kyiv. People of Kyiv had no bread, no water, no heating. In 1943 Kyiv was liberated. In a historically short period of time Kyiv rose from ruins. Now it is big political and cultural centre. It becomes youngest and more beautiful every day.

Dear friends, thank you for your active work at the lesson. And at the end of our lesson let's sing a song “ Kyiv of mine”, written by Dmytro Lytsenko.
Greenery lays like an ocean
Peace of days burns to night
Dear grows my devotion
To the Dnipro's steep hights
Swaying branches before you
Love's dreams may enshrine
How can I not adore you
Kyiv of mine!
Грає море зелене,
Тихий день догора.
Дорогими для мене
Стали схили Дніпра,
Де колишуться віти
Закоханих мрій…
Як тебе не любити,
Києве мій!
