The World Around Us: Nature and Art
Level: intermediate
Objectives:
- to widen pupils' knowledge on the topic;
- to cultivate pupils' linguistic skills and habits;
- to help pupils develop their vocabulary by its active use;
- to develop pupils' habits of dialogue and discussion
- to inspire pupils' interest in learning English to create a desire for communication
Equipment: 1. paintings (portraits, landscapes of different styles);
Procedure:
I. Introductory part: 1. greeting
2. explaining the aim of the lesson
II. Main part of the lesson:
1.Brainstorm: T.
What does the world "world" mean to you? (pupils' expected answers: nature, people, cities, etc.)
- Do you suppose you know well the world around you?
- What are your impressions of wood walk?
- Do you feel better after it?
Were you impressed by bird singing?
- Would you prefe to go for a walk in sunny or rainy weather?
- Will you go for a walk alone or with your friends?
- Have you ever watched animals or insects in the forest?
- Is it pleasant for you to look at the stormy sea?
- Why do people keep fish at home?
- What do you feel while swimming in the sea?
- Are you afraid of penetrating into the deep oceam?
- Do you get pleased when climbing the high mountains?
P1: Nature disaster.
P2: Ecological danger, and so on.
Pupils read and translate the text "Human legacy of Chernobyl"
9. Working with the vocabulary: find the proper definition, (exercise 2 is added).
10. Introduction of new lexical material: T. exeplains expressions on the table in English.

13. Discussion in small groups on problems:
- The language of art is universal.
- Would you like in the real world without art?
- There is a great number of pictures on the walls of our shool building. What's the purpose of it?
III. Summing up.
Home assignment: write a composition "My favourite picture".
P.S. While working on the topic "The World Around
Us: Nature and Art" you can add some more exercises.
1. Role - play "The Quarrel": two pupils imitate the quarrel, then ask pupils if it was a game or reality, other pupils try to guess.
T.: There is one more kind of art which also reflects the real world. Some people don't it. Some others are fond of it. I think this kind of art reflects reality best of all. Can you guess what I'm speaking about? Yes, it's a theatre. What do you think of it? (Possible answers: - Theatre plays an important role in our life).
- We don't need theatre in our modern 1 ife.
- It attracts a 1 ot of people.
- It's a place for relaxation.
2. Reading the text "Theatre" and working on its Lexics.
3. Role-play "The Quction" where some paintings or some other kinds of art are sold. Their features
and peculiarities are described and appreciated.
