Today we’re going to have an unusual lesson. It will be a competition between 3 teams. I will write the points for your right answers on the blackboard and at the end of the lesson we’ll find out which team in the cleverest, the smartest, the most talented. So, let’s start!
2. Warm –up (Speaking)
The topic of our lesson is “Cooking”. People from around the world eat different kinds of food and they have different tastes. There is а nice proverb on the blackboard to begin our lesson Tastes differ.
However, let’s remember other English proverbs about food and eating habits.
Match the beginnings of some British proverbs with their endings and get your first points!
The appetite comes |
after supper walk а mile. |
After dinner sleep а while |
an angry man. |
An apple а day |
with eating. |
A hungry man is |
but eat to live. |
Every cook praises his own |

3. Speaking

4. Vocabulary
Let’s do the crossword on the blackboard. The representatives of the teams should go to the blackboard and right down the word correctly. This is the task for the first team (second…, third … and again)

5. Vocabulary. Work in groups.
We have just remembered some food from three food groups: fruit and vegetable, meat and dairy products . Can you remember and write 5 different names of different products from these food groups? The first team should write 5 names of the products from the meat group, the second team – from the dairy products group and the third team – from the fruit and vegetable group. You should work together and help each other. Hurry up because you have only 2 minutes!
(possible answers)
Lamb Pork Ham Beef Chicken |
Butter Milk Yogurt Cheese Sour-cream |
Grapes Cucumber Onion Apricot Tomato |
6. Vocabulary. Speaking.
Find the odd word and explain your choice. (the words are on the blackboard)
7. Playing the game.
Now I’m sure that you know the names of different foods really well. But it is not enough. To cook them we need different things in our kitchen. For example, a frying-pan, a kettle…One person from each team will come to me and choose a picture with a thing we can see in the kitchen. The pictures are here and they are face down. The task is to explain what thing it is only with the help of gestures without words! (див. додаток)
8. Listening. (text for listening from the textbook English Test Trainer A2 p. 60 Listening 12 Fast Food)
Now we have foods and kitchen things and we can start cooking. Are you all good cookers? I’m really not sure. For the beginners we will listen to the cookery programme and get to know a very easy recipe. While listening, you should complete the sentences with one word, name or number. You will listen to the recoding twice.
1. The name of the programme is the ______ Cook programme.
2. You should use a _____ egg when cooking a soft-boiled egg.
3. You need to use five _____ of water.
4. The perfect amount of time to boil an egg is ____ minutes.
5. A soft-boiled egg tastes best when eaten with ____ .
6. People can learn how to cook ________ on the programme next week.
9. Strip-story
Do you know any recipes for true English dishes? Do you want to get to know them? Now you will have such opportunity. The first team will work with the recipe of English soup, the second one will soon tell us the recipe for one of the tastiest meat dishes and the third team will read out a recipe for a delicious desert. Look at the pictures on the posters and glue the strips describing the actions in the pictures. Let’s start!
(Тhe teacher distributes 3 nicely decorated posters prepared in advance with the names of 3 English dishes and pictures with step-by-step preparation glued beforehand on the poster. (one poster with one dish for each team. Children work in teams. The task for the children is to glue the stripes with the descriptions of the actions under the pictures.) (див. додаток)
10. Reading and speaking
Now I’m sure that you are very good cooks and can give a helping hand to my English friend. When she came to Ukraine she liked Ukrainian borsch very much and she wrote down the recipe. However, she made a lot of mistakes and when she cooked it the dish was really terrible. Let’s help her together and correct the mistakes in the recipe on the blackboard (the recipe was covered up to this minute).
1 To make borsch you need some meat, potatoes, greens, fruit and vegetables.
2 First, wash meat, put it in fizzy water and boil broth
3 Then, peel potatoes and cut into pyramids.
4. After that, take some cabbage and fry into strips
5. Heat the frying pan and fry chopped carrots, beets, onion, tomatoes, and Bulgarian cucumbers and put them into the pot.
6. Add some greens, salt and pepper and serve with raspberry jam.
11. Acting.
Now we have very tasty dishes and it’s time to set the table. Who wants to be a waiter? You should come up to the tables and put the plates, glasses and other things correctly. Also, you should do it as quickly as possible. (див. додаток)
12. Checking-up homework. Role-playing.
Now we have set three tables. Each team has prepared a short scene "At the Restaurant". You should look, listen to the dialogues and say what the problem is. Let’s look at the acting of the first team. The task for the second team is to understand the dialogue and say why the customer was not happy at the restaurant. (див. додаток)
13. Vocabulary
I want to thank all the actors. Your acting was wonderful.
Now I want to ask the teams to find the names of different tasty dishes in the crossword puzzle. (there are 12 of them). Write them down on the sheet of paper or simply circle them in the crossword puzzle.
You have only 2 minutes. What team will find more than others? (the teacher prepares the copies of the task beforehand. One or two for each team. )

14. Evaluation.
Now the competition is over. I want to thank everybody for your taking active part in the lesson. Let’s count the points and congratulate the winners.
15. Homework.
You've all worked hard. During the lesson, we remembered the names of different dishes, set the table, “went” to a restaurant and imagined ourselves to be waiters or excellent cooks. So, at home, I want to ask you to memorize the recipe for one of your favorite dishes and write down in your notebook what foods you need to prepare it and how you cook it. Start like this:
My favourite dish is …. To make it I need… First, I… Then …Next… Finally…Enjoy your…
You also may get an additional good mark. Check up your knowledge, creativity and your logical thinking. Log on to the website join.naurok.ua, key in the code … and your name and do the test “Food”. I wish you good luck.
